We worked on speeches for the first section of our time together
today. We repeated yesterday’s procedure. Eight students volunteered to say
their speeches to the whole class. Students chose to stay and be part of the
audience and give feedback to those presenting or to go outside into the
hallways and practice their speech to a buddy or on their own. The eight who
presented today received excellent feedback from their peers and from me. They
are coming home with a written transcript of the feedback to help them improve
their speech. Everyone should be practicing and memorizing their speech. The
in-class contest takes place on Tuesday, February 4th. All students
must wear blazers – no hoodies – for the oral competition.
Next, we continued working on our How we organize ourselves unit. We
began by having students share the results of their Global
Connections Treasure Hunt. Countries that were mentioned were pinned on our class
map. In addition to the countries that were pinned yesterday, students should
be able to identify and locate Pakistan, Japan, UAE, Kenya, Luxembourg, Canada,
USA, Aruba, Bangladesh, Germany, and South Korea on a blank map. Students
received a blank map today. They are to use this map to label all pinned
countries and they should use it as a study tool to prepare for the unit test.
Our goal for today’s inquiry lesson was for students
to continue to develop an understanding of the connections that Canada has with
other countries. They participated in a fun activity with Aanika reading the
story of the Global Kid out loud. She was interrupted by a number of students
who described global connections between the kid in the story and the products
he was using. Our hope is to add more pins to our world map tomorrow to further
represent the connections in the Global Kid story and from students’ Global Connections
Treasure Hunt.
We had more inquiry time at the end of the day. This
time our learning goal was to describe the advantages and disadvantages of
different map projections and how they shape how we see the world. Ask your
child to tell you about the short comings of the Mercator and Peters maps. We
had fun looking at the globe from different perspectives and identifying the
different continents. Students are encouraged to further explore
the Mapping our world
website and activities on their own.
We ended our inquiry time with a mapping activity. On
their ‘Continents’ map, students are to:
·
use the key we created in class to
neatly colour the continents as follows
o
North America (red)
o
South America (yellow)
o
Africa (green)
o
Europe (purple)
o
Antarctica (white)
o
Australia (brown)
o
Asia (orange)
·
to do some research to discover where
Europe ends and Asia begins
·
discover which continent Greenland
belongs to
·
discover which continent Iceland
belongs to
·
label the one line of longitude
and the three lines of latitude on the map
·
add the compass rose to the map –
research if you don’t know what this is
·
Colour all oceans, seas, and lakes
in blue
Incomplete mapwork is to be completed for homework and
is due tomorrow.
