French and English Explorers

We continued working on speeches today. I met with most students and checked that they recorded 3- 5 examples for reason # 2 in their chart. Some students had to improve this work if their examples were too general, repetitive, or weak.  We continued to focus on researching to find out if the reasons students have generated for their opinion are true and factual. Students are to find examples and evidences that support their reasons. Today’s goal was to record 3 – 5 jot-notes in the organizer that support the third reason as well as summarize their research. Any incomplete work is to be done as homework. Parents, please look at this organizer and give your child feedback on their ideas. Students may change/improve their information based on their discussions with parents. We are on our Crawford Lake trip tomorrow. Students are to complete their counterargument research for homework tomorrow. All this work is due on Friday.

Next, we continued working on our Where we are in place and time inquiry unit. We beg. Today students learned about Henry the Navigator’s school for man by taking up yesterday’s worksheet on Spanish explorers and reviewing the travels of the Portuguese and Spanish. Students then learned about English and French explorers. For homework, students are complete the fill-in-the-blank worksheets and questions about these explorers. They are to also add John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto), Giovanni da Verrazano, and Henry Hudson to their timelines. All this work is due this Friday.
The inquiry unit test will be written on Tuesday, January 21st. Students should study all work including Aboriginal perspectives on who first founded America, scientific theories such as the Beringia Land Bridge theory, Map work (continents and oceans), all explorers (Asians, Polynesians, Irish, Vikings, Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French), events leading up to the Age of exploration (1095 & 1453 AD/CE), Reasons for European exploration, and technological advances that allowed for successful exploration.
At the end of the day we continued working on our Viking art project. We used tempera to paint the sea/ocean. As with so many of our art projects this was messy – especially when using splatter paint for the foam. I apologise for paint on uniform. It does wash out (I hope).

Students attended French class with Mme. Stella and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math students took up yesterday’s homework on misleading graphs. They then began working on the review worksheet. For homework, students are to complete the review. This is due on Friday. The unit test has been postponed to Monday, January 20th.
We are out on our Crawford Lake trip tomorrow. Students are to dress warmly as we will be outdoors all day. Snow pants are recommended. Bring a hat and gloves and a packed lunch.
