The Age of Exploration

We continued working on speeches today. I met with each student to ensure their Speech Organizer was completed and had been approved by parents. This week our speech focus is on researching to find out if the reasons students have generated for their opinion are true and factual. Students are to find examples and evidences that support their reasons. They are to record these in their Persuasive Essay Organizer. Today’s goal was to record 3 – 5 jot-notes in the organizer that support the first reason. Students could find sources in our school library or use internet sources. Either way, they are to record their source in their organizer. Finally, they had to summarize their research. Any incomplete work is to be done as homework. Parents, please look at this organizer and give your child feedback on their ideas. Students may change/improve their information based on their discussions with parents.
Next, we continued working on our Where we are in place and time inquiry unit. Students learned a lot of interesting history about the Holy Land. Ask your child to tell you what they learned about the events that led to the Age of Exploration – specifically, ask them what happened in 1095 AD/CE and again in 1453 AD/CE. They are to complete worksheets that did not get done in class for homework. This is due tomorrow when we will take up the work. We then discussed reasons for European exploration from 1450 – 1600 AD/CE and the technological advances that allowed exploration to be more successful than in previous years. Students recorded notes about these advances.
The inquiry unit test will be written on Monday, January 20th. Students should study all work including Aboriginal perspectives on who first founded America, scientific theories such as the Beringia Land Bridge theory, Map work (continents and oceans), all explorers (Asians, Polynesians, Irish, Vikings and more), events leading up to the Age of exploration (1095 & 1453 AD/CE), Reasons for European exploration, and technological advances that allowed for successful exploration.
Students attended French class with Mme. Stella and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math students discussed the mid unit review and homework on applications of mean, median and mode.
Students are reminded of the different parts of the graph and how to describe trends and answer questions using a line graph. The unit test will be written on Friday, January 17th.
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, January 15th. Arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring your own charged device. The interactive question will be FRUIT SALAD which you can practice now on Caribou’s games page. This is a new game. Students, please test it and let Caribou know of any problems. There is no history question in the January contest.
