It
was strange to not be working on speeches today. We had a more relaxed pace in
our class now that speech writing and presenting is done. Well done to all for
their hard work and courage presenting to an audience of 50 people.
We
continued working on our How we organize ourselves inquiry unit. We played a
trade game where students represented different countries and told others what
their country exports to other countries. We used yarn to represent trades. It
was a fun activity which helped us understand how connected the world is. We pinned
the countries from the game to our class world map. These countries should be
added to students’ individual countries map and should be studied: Norway,
Thailand, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Mexico, Czech Republic,
Denmark, France, Australia, Cuba, Argentina, South Africa, Malaysia.
Students
began working on one of their summative tasks for this unit. They will be
learning about the PEPS features of one of Canada’s provinces or territories
with a focus on recognizing the connections between the PEPS features e.g., the
physical features determine resources which in term impact social or economic
features – mountains are good for skiing. Skiing means jobs as ski instructors
(economic impact). Skiing impacts social aspects, e.g. all the sports and activities
related to ski hills, etc. Students formed paired groups and chose a province
or territory for their project as follows:

Students have made good progress on recording their research in
their organizers. They will have more time to complete their research tomorrow.
I had individual DRA conferences with students while groups were
working on their research. We managed to complete ¾ of the conferences. We will
continue with conferences tomorrow.
Students attended French class with Mme. Stella and math class
with Ms. Joseph. In math, students were introduced to
their new unit - Geometry. Ms. Joseph reviewed classification of triangles
based on side lengths and angles and discussed the triangle properties. Students
practiced questions to construct a triangle when given 3 sides or 1 side and 2
angles.
