Terry Fox Run

Today, Grade 6s expressed some of their understandings and ideas about electricity through the creative writing. They were prompted to write a paragraph describing what a day without electricity would be like. The criteria for this paragraph were:

o My sentences are grammatically correct and easy to understand.
o  I have used correct conventions (spelling, punctuation, capitalization)
o  My paragraph begins with a topic sentence, is stuffed with imaginative details and examples in the middle, and ends with a concluding sentence
o  My writing is logical and makes sense
o  I make connections between my life and how no electricity would affect my life

We finished up our work on similes. When students shared their similes, the audience responded by describing the way the simile made them feel or they described the imagery the simile evoked in them. We understand that writers use literary devices such as similes for these very purposes.

In inquiry time, we took up out notes about Galvani & Volta. Many students did not cite their sources correctly. They are encouraged to read up on the lesson Ms. Hayward gave us (check Monday’s blog) and visit Ms. Hayward’s library blog for more information on MLA citations. We also watched a video that helped us to consolidate our understanding the Law of Conservation of Energy.

In today’s inquiry time, students conducted an investigation to determine if the materials supplied are conductors are insulators. This was a fun time.

We made some interesting observations, and students are to do research to explain what we saw. The questions are:
·         Why do bubbles form at the negative electrode when passing an electric current through a salt solution?
·         Why does the salt solution change colour, from clear to yellow to orange/brown when an electric current is passed through a salt solution?

Finding and understanding the answers to these questions are worth house points!

Students will be creating a pinwheel as part of or inquiry unit and art this term. Ask your child to explain why this project falls under art and UOI. Students need to select 4 geometric designs for the one side of their pinwheel. Watch the video links below for ideas and inspiration.

Students attended French and math classes today. Today’s math class was interrupted by the Terry Fox Run and was much shorter than usual. Students reviewed yesterday’s homework with Ms. Joseph and discussed a couple of word problems in the class. For today’s homework they are to complete Page 12/13 Questions 5, 6, 7 and 12.
