Electrical Safety

Today was a very busy day in Grade 6. We had our first literature circle session. Groups met to discuss Chapter 1 of The City of Ember. I sat with Group 1 today. Students then had a good chunk of class time to read Chapter 2. For homework, they should complete the reading of Chapter 2 and their assigned response. Our next discussion takes place tomorrow.

During today’s inquiry time, we got caught up on taking up past worksheets. Students then worked on completing yesterday’s troubleshooting letter. Later in the day we continued with our energy inquiry. Today’s focus was to learn about safe practices involving electrical outlets, devices, etc. Students watched videos and took notes. They will be creating an electrical safety poster tomorrow. The class brainstormed ideas on the criteria of an effective poster.

Students attended French and math classes today. In math, students reviewed square numbers and were introduced to square roots. Students are reminded that we can model a square number by drawing a square. Also, when we multiply a number by itself, we square the number. Squaring and taking a square root are inverse operations. We practiced questions to find the square and square roots. For homework students are to complete the last page of the mid unit review (GCF and LCM).

This class is taking lots of action. We had a number of students share their research about last Friday’s experiment on insulators and conductors. Sofia opened up a battery (with her dad’s supervision – don’t do this on your own kids) on the weekend in an effort to find the answer to our question “What is in a battery?” Vishva shared a video link about how a potato can be used to power a digital clock. Emana shared a PowerPoint she had made about the different forms of energy. A number of parents at today’s BBQ told me that their children were practicing mind mapping at home on their own topics. Well done Grade 6s!

In between all this work, students independently recorded a few more examples of idioms and their meanings.

It was wonderful catching up with families at the Welcome BBQ today!

Our class is responsible for the Bake Sale that will take place next week Tuesday and Wednesday. Students are asked to contribute bake sale items. These MUST be PEANUT and NUT FREE. Thank you.
