Research Skills

We began our day with a language lesson. Our goal was to understand and use similes. By examining examples of similes, students were able to define a simile. Ask your child to define a simile.

Students attended math class with Ms. Jospeh. Here is a message from Ms. Joseph:

Today I reviewed the multiplication table.
Discussed rounding the numbers to the nearest 10,100 amd 1000. Students are encouraged to  look at the digit to the right of the place to which they are rounding, if this digit is 5 or greater, add 1 to the place digit. If it is not, leave the place digit as it is.
Also reviewed multiplying by 10, 100 & 1000.
Practiced questions from the worksheet.
Homework - Complete the worksheet.

Ms. Hayward visited our class to teach students about academic honesty. She discussed plagiarism, paraphrasing, collusion, and citation. Ask your child to tell you what they learned about these concepts. She then asked students to visit a provided website to find out what happens when you overuse energy? Students struggled to find the information with limited information (the container). They learned that it was important to have all accurate information such as the entire web address, even if it is a lot of letters and numbers: correct website. Once there, they learned how to cite this source using MLA formatting as follows:

Author. “Title of Source.” Title of Container, Other Contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication Date, Location. Date Accessed.

For the website we visited, we cited the site as follows:

Rogers, Chris Dinesen. “What are the effects of overusing energy?” SFGate. Hearst Newspaper LLC, 27 December 2018, Web https://homeguides.sfgate.com/effects-overusing-energy-78753.html. 9 September 2019.

Ms. Hayward directed students to resources on her library website that teach academic honesty and MLA citations.

We continued our Sharing the planet inquiry unit. Today we discussed our summative task which is also our science fair project. Parents, please read and sign the letter at the front of the Science Fair Duo-tang. Students will need to bring in $15 cash, a storage box, and materials such as bottle caps, empty water bottles, and small boxes. As a class we read the expectations of this project. We went through the entire package which guides students through the engineering design process, including the rubric which will be assessed to evaluate students work and the scoring card that the science fair judges will use.

We continued with our inquiry unit by learning about how to take notes when conducting internet research and listening.

Students then visited the above two different websites to learn about the contributions of Alessandro Volta and Luigi Galvani to our current understanding of electricity. They read about these scientists and took notes. Students are to complete their note-taking on Galvani and Volta for homework. They then applied their learning from Ms. Hayward’s lesson to cite these websites using MLA formatting. Ask your child to tell you about these scientists. Students will be creating a timeline about scientists who made contributions to electricity. They began work on their timeline by adding Volta and Galvani to the timeline.

Emaan has beautifully drawn up our essential agreement, however Mme. Stella wants students to translate this agreement into French. The goal is to have this done by Friday. Students will then sign the bilingual agreement.
