Students
will be using mind mapping as a way to consolidate their notes, organize their
thoughts, and study for tests. Our first UOI test will take place on October 2nd.
The first mind map is due on September 25th and will represent all students
have learned about energy during our first inquiry unit. Today, students
received two samples of mind maps. We discussed the format of mind maps and how
each person will produce a different map mind. Lastly, we watched Hazel Wagner’s
Ted Talk about mind
mapping. Students have received a checklist that includes all the criteria that
need to be considered when working on their energy mind map.
Today, we
continued our inquiry into energy. Today’s learning goal was for students to
understand the Law of Conservation of Energy. They identified
the types of energy observed in a variety of appliances. They described the types of
transformations occurring in each appliance, e.g. electrical energy ð
heat energy. Finally,
to be allowed to leave the classroom for gym, they had to recite
the Law of Conservation of Energy: energy can neither be created
nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from
one form to another. It was a
noisy, but fun class. For homework, students are to complete their Transforming Energy Centres worksheet
and add all they have learned about energy so far to their Energy Mind Map.
Students who
correctly said yesterday’s big 1 Amp number (6 quintillion 240 quadrillion) got
house points for their effort.
Students attended French, music, gym, and math classes today. In math, students discussed the homework on divisibility rules. They reviewed the rules especially for the numbers 4, 6, 8 and 9. They briefly discussed the difference between exact and approximate numbers. For homework, they are to complete Page 10 Q 1 & 2.
