We had a productive first day back to school.
We began the day with a presentation on the expectations of
Grade 6 and exhibition. All 3 Grade 6 classes came together for this and heard
from Ms. Jaskolka, Mr. Conte, Mme. Stella, and myself.
Once on our own, students took time to get settled in the
classroom and learn more about our routines. Students received their agendas
and agenda bags today. Please check and sign agendas daily. Students were also
assigned their Math Makes Sense 7 textbooks.
Students recorded their textbook numbers in the front of their agendas.
Textbooks are stored in class unless there is homework assigned.
We took time to brainstorm ideas for our essential
agreement.
Students have been tasked with their first bit of homework –
producing A-4 sized posters for our class that teach and promote the IB learner
profile attributes and attitudes. Grade 6 students have made the following poster
choices:

Some students have volunteered to create more than one
poster. I am thankful for that. As a class, students generated the following
criteria for effective posters:
-
use colour to increase the appeal
-
describe the attribute/attitude in a
phrase/sentence
-
be organized in planning out the poster
-
use a title
-
be creative
-
use images (drawn or pasted)
Posters are to be completed for homework and are due on
Monday, September 9th.
We had our first language lesson today. We will be learning
about and writing different forms of poetry over this month. Students will then
choose their favourite poem to submit to the Polar Expressions poetry competition.
Some rules of the competition state that entries must be original works and
must be edited by same-age peers. We will be abiding by these rules and all
writing will take place in class. Today’s learning goal was for students to
recognize and write an action-word poem using the correct form. We examined and
described the form of an action-word poem titled The Niagara River. We then composed a class poem titled Mr. Oliver. Ask your child to describe
the form of an action-word poem using the success criteria we used in class
today.
Students attended music and gym class today. They also
attended their first Neophyte week house game. This involved a fun race where
students had to move balls with their faces. Well done to Kappa for winning the
student game and to Zeta for winning the teacher game. Zeta is currently in the
lead for the house cup thanks to the efforts of Zeta teachers during our PD
weeks in August.
