Circuit Symbols

Grade 6s were introduced to the novel study for this term. We will be reading The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. Today, students received their copy of the novel, and their novel study duo-tangs. They heard how they will be reading the book, completing literature circles responses, and discussing their thoughts with their groups on a daily basis. Today, they worked on a scavenger hunt activity, where they recorded their ideas based on the limited information of the front cover. As part of their summative task for novel study, students will complete a book report, where they will summarise the book, reflect on and interpret the book, and make connections to our current inquiry unit, Sharing the planet.

Students were introduced to idioms, phrases whose intended meanings do not match their literal meanings. Students quickly understood idioms after hearing a couple of examples and started providing examples of idioms. Ask your child to tell you some of the idioms we discussed in class.

We began working on science fair. We watched a couple of videos to help students get ideas of how to accomplish the design challenge. We will continue watching more videos this week.

In inquiry time, a number of students said that they had action to share. Unfortunately, we did not have a lot of time due to it being a gym and music day. I look forward to hearing what these students have to share tomorrow. In today’s class we discussed how impractical it would be for electricians to draw out pictures of batteries, switches, light bulbs, etc., every time they recorded or planned an electric circuit. Students learned the symbols that electricians use the world over. They drew the circuit symbols and took notes about the function of each circuit component. Students who did not complete this work in class are to complete it for homework.

Students attended French, music, gym, and math classes today. In math, students worked on factors and multiples. Students are reminded that a factor is a number that divides exactly into another number. Students were able to state the factors of some numbers. They reviewed prime numbers and composite numbers on the basis of the number of factors. They received a handout that included important terms and definitions. For homework, they are to complete Page 16/17 Questions 1, 2 & 4.

The last page of the Family Handbook is past due. Signed science fair letters and $15 science fair materials is past due.

Look out for Fall Fundraising forms coming home today. These are due on Wednesday. Also look out for a letter about a golfing trip coming home today. Permission for the golfing trip is due this Friday.
