The Votes are In: Madagascar!!!

Orange Shirt Day

Mr. Khan was a guest speaker during inquiry time today. He spoke to the class about electricity generation in general and nuclear energy in particular. He shared information of his experience as a mechanical engineer working at a nuclear station. He explained how electricity is produced from nuclear fission. He focused his explanation on a high pressure reactor. His explanation included details about uranium isotopes, neutrons fired at the uranium atoms, neutron absorption, radioactivity, the production of super steam, and more. Students had the opportunity to ask questions. Mr. Khan said that students asked good questions. Thank you for your time, Mr. Khan.

Next we had science fair time. Today, students recorded their preconstruction sketch and labeled their sketch using the relevant vocabulary. They also listed all materials needed. Students should ensure they have all materials needed as we begin building tomorrow.

We had novel study time today. Students met in groups to discuss Chapter 6 of The City of Ember. Students had some time to complete today’s reading in class. Their response should be completed for homework if they did not get done in class. Our next discussion takes place tomorrow.

Students attended French, gym, and math classes today. In math, Ms. Joseph took up the math review work with students.  The math unit test will be written tomorrow, Tuesday, October 1st.

Our class is responsible for the bake sale taking place tomorrow and Wednesday.  Students are asked to contribute bake sale items. These MUST be PEANUT and NUT FREE. Thank you.

Devices are needed for tomorrow’s inquiry time. Students will be researching.

International Day takes place in a few weeks. Our class has chosen to represent Madagascar.

I shared my study suggestions with students. When studying I …

·         Read through all notes at least 3 times (mostly out loud)

·         Test myself - Make lists/summaries/draw diagrams of all I can remember without looking at my notes

·         Check to see what I have forgotten/omitted/can’t remember – Reread/ go over these sections again

·         Explain difficult concepts to someone (family members, pets, teddy bear)

·         Ask a family member to quiz you

Energy Transformations at Generating Stations

Our Fall Fundraiser Assembly took place at the end of the day. Quite a few unlucky teachers were chosen to be pied! The students loved this. Thanks to everyone for their fundraising efforts.  Earlier in the day, after all our work was done, students had their hour of electronics time.

We watched one final video that might help us generate ideas about building an electric car. Students were required to complete their final thumbnail sketch during this time. Students are asked to decide which one of their thumbnail sketches they will proceed with. They should discuss their ideas with family members, listen to suggestions and advice before deciding which one they will build.

Students learned how wind, coal, uranium, and water is used to generate electricity at stations. To understand these complex processes, students began by reading about each kind of generating station in their OPG Guide. Once they completed the reading, the received scrambled flow charts that represented the process and energy transformations at each station. Students used their understandings to unscramble the flow charts.

Once they had done this they were required to explain the process and record the correct flow chart in their notes. Student’s mind maps were marked today. Most mind maps could use a lot more information and detail. Please check the feedback on mind maps that are coming home today. Once the missing information and detail is added, students should consider how to use the mind map as a study tool for Wednesday’s test. Students are to complete their Electric Timelines for Monday.

Students attended French and math classes today. In math, Ms. Joseph discussed the math that was assigned yesterday. She also discussed the different criteria which will be used to assess students on the math test. Today’s class focused on factors, multiples, LCM, GCF, long division and multiplication and exponents. They practiced a couple of word problems as well. Students are to complete the review package they received in class today as homework. This will be taken up on Monday. The math unit test is postponed to Tuesday, October 1st.

There has been a change in the bake sale dates. The bake sale has been moved to October 1st and 2nd. Our class is responsible for the bake sale that takes place on these days. Students are asked to contribute bake sale items. These MUST be PEANUT and NUT FREE. Thank you.

Monday is Orange Shirt Day.

Whacky Thursday

Our Fall Fundraiser Assembly took place at noon today. A Grade 2 student was today’s top pledge raiser. She chose to creatively style Ms. Cass’ hair. The assembly included a musical chairs house game.  Tomorrow is Casual Day and the last day to submit pledges. Students are to encourage to allow the idea of pie-ing Mr. OliverJ  drive their last minute fundraising efforts. Remember your devices if you are participating in the electronics party. Students may also visit the snack bar – bring some change.

We spent time collecting due work today. This included OPG packages, OPG graphs, electrical safety posters, and energy mind maps. Students who did not hand in this work are reminded to submit it tomorrow.

We watched more videos that might help us generate ideas about building an electric car. Students were required to complete their second thumbnail sketch during this time.

We had novel study time today. Students discussed Chapter 5 of The City of Ember. They had some time to read Chapter 6. Chapter 6 responses are due on Monday. We will not have novel study time tomorrow.

Students attended French and math classes today. In math, students took and discussed up their homework on number patterns. They practiced describing patterns with square numbers and cubed numbers. For homework, they are to complete Question 8 on page 31 and Questions 1 – 14 on Pages 35 – 36. The tentative date for the math test is Monday, September 30.

There has been a change in the bake sale dates. The bake sale has been moved to October 1st and 2nd. Our class is responsible for the bake sale that takes place on these days. Students are asked to contribute bake sale items. These MUST be PEANUT and NUT FREE. Thank you.

Learning About Spreadsheets

Our Fall Fundraiser Assembly took place at 12:30 pm today. A number of students were the top pledge raisers. They got to apply make-up, in a very comic way, to Mr. Oliver. Tomorrow is Whacky Thursday! Remember to dress as bizarrely was you would like.

All of today’s inquiry time was about OPG’s generating stations. Students used the data in their guide to graph the stations by type and energy production. We used Excel or Google Sheets for this purpose. This was a very slow process, but I think students have learned a lot about spreadsheets and how to use them for graphing. Students are to email me or print out their two OPG graphs.  These are due tomorrow. Students did not get to complete their inferences. The entire OPG Energy Mix package is to be completed for homework and submitted for marking tomorrow.

In our busyness, we did not get to collect mind maps. This will be collected tomorrow instead.

We did not have time for novel study today. There is no novel study homework assigned.

Students attended French and math classes today. In math, students took up the homework on exponents and were introduced to number patterns. They discussed how to identify a pattern, write the next terms in the series and described patterns. For homework, they are to complete Q. 1, 2, 3, 6 on P. 30 – 31. Reminder - tentative date for the math test - Monday, September 30.

Students enjoyed their ice cream sandwiches at lunch today.

There has been a change in the bake sale dates. The bake sale has been moved to October 1st and 2nd. Our class is responsible for the bake sale that takes place on these days. Students are asked to contribute bake sale items. These MUST be PEANUT and NUT FREE. Thank you.
