Students
began their day with French class. The last bit of French class was cut short due
to a short rehearsal for our Christmas Concert introduction.
Students
then began presenting their projects about the connections between flying
devices and society and/or the environment. It was great being part of the
audience and learning from this group of students. These have been graded and
are coming home today. Students who have not already done so are asked to email
me their slideshows.
Once
presentations were done, we worked on paper weaving in order to create our hot
air balloon baskets. Team work was evident as students helped each other with
this finicky task. Students who did not complete their baskets in class today
are to complete them for homework and bring them to school tomorrow.
At the end
of the day, students began working on their summative project for our air and
flight inquiry unit. One of today’s goals was for students to understand the
summative task. They received two packages. The first is a set of instructions
that takes students through the scientific process. The second is a report that
students will complete as they work through the steps. Students will use the scientific method to
investigate which paper airplane design is best. Our operational definition of
‘best’ is the paper airplane that flies the farthest. The class worked on their
background research to discover the characteristics of planes that fly far. The
hope is that they will use these ideas when choosing their template and designing
their test. At the end of the process, students will participate in an air show
where the best plane will win. All paper
planes for this unit must be constructed at school. Next, students had the
opportunity to consider 13 different paper airplane templates available in the
classroom.
They are to look for additional templates at home or even design
their own template if they wish. Templates must be brought to school on Friday.
Students placed themselves in a group with someone they have not worked with
before.
We used the
last 10 minutes of the day to work on our Christmas Concert performance. Forms
about costumes went home on Monday. Forms and payment are due on Friday.
