More about Bernoulli's Principle and Flight

Congratulations to Jasmeet for winning the Knowledgeable Award at this morning’s assembly!

We had two sessions of inquiry time again today. In the morning we completed and reviewed yesterday’s discussions of air pressure, Bernoulli’s Principle, and airfoils. Students showed improved understanding today after having time to sleep on all this new information. Later in the day, we made and tested a paper airfoil. Students then drew, labeled, and explained (using scientific and technological vocabulary) how Bernoulli’s Principle can be used to explain lift in an airfoil. We used a checklist to help us ensure we had done this completely. Some students have asked for a picture of today’s board work – please find below. The sentences were constructed in collaboration with students. Students should study this work, practice drawing and writing explanations, as well as orally teaching someone else to prepare for Monday’s test on Bernoulli’s Principle. Students should use the checklist they received in class today to ensure they are fully describing Bernoulli’s Principle and its connection to flight.

Grade 6s attended French, music, gym, and math class today. In math, they took up yesterday’s homework on the surface area of a rectangular prisms. The surface area of the prism is given by the formula, SA = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw.  They also discussed questions that involved finding the surface area when the dimensions are doubled or tripled. For homework they are to complete the review sheet and Q. 8a on textbook page 100. The tentative day for the unit test is Thursday, November 7th.

Hot lunch payments are to be made through QuickBooks by November 6th.

Our collection of ‘Lost and Found’ items is piling up. Please make some time to come into the school building and a look through the lost and found items. These are now located in the GYM. On November 8th at 4pm all left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.

Please send in newspapers if you have any. We need these for a Papier-mâché project we will be working on during this unit.

Curling permission forms and waivers are past due tomorrow. Please return these ASAP as we are curling on Tuesday, November 5th.

A couple of students have not completed their Polar Expression entry forms. These are past due. Please submit these ASAP.

A number of parents have expressed an interest in attending the trip to the Canadian Warplane museum. We already have enough parent volunteers, but I understand the increased interest as it is a lovely place to visit. Parents who would like, may attend if they are willing to pay the entry fee once we arrive at the museum. You are still required to have a vulnerable sector check on file in order to travel and be with students while on the trip. I believe there will be sufficient space on the bus for parents to travel with us. Let me know if this is something you would like to do.

The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring a charged device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You have one hour to write the test. This month’s test includes an interactive question. The interactive question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2 to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to 10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving triangles for Grades 11/12.  You can practice these now on Caribou’s Games page. Let Caribou know if you have any problems with the games.  Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing yourselves with these games before the contest.  Because certain games pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday morning, November 12th, (start of the contest in the far East) to Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.  For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether. Students in these grades should read the relevant section of Caribou’s History page in your preferred language to prepare.

After-care payments for October are now due and should be paid by November 15th, 2019.
