The Four Forces of Flight

We had two sessions of inquiry time today. In the morning, students investigated what propels an object like a plane forward, what slows it down, and what makes it turn. They did this with a paper glider design that was provided. Folding the plane was tough for some. They should practice these skills at home. They had turns throwing and testing their planes after each change they made, made observations about how the flight was affected and recorded their results. After their investigation, they wrote a report summarizing their results. They identified the variables in their experiment as part of their report.

Later in the day, students learned about the ‘four forces of flight’. They watched a couple of videos, read an informational text, discussed these forces, and answered questions about them on a worksheet.

We continued exploring tales and legends, which are this term’s narrative writing form. We read the final examples of these types of writing that were written by students. We added more criteria to the list that represents what was done well in these writing pieces. Grade 6s are becoming more skilled at identifying the criteria in the writing examples and supporting their ideas with examples from the samples.

During second recess, we had Christmas concert auditions for speaking parts. Thank you to all who auditioned. It was a tough to be in the decision-making seat in this way. The roles are assigned as follows:

Angel: Emana

Shepherd: Pooshne

Magi: Charlie, Jaiden, Himmat

King Herod: Divyansh

More details about costumes will be coming soon.

Students used first recess to work on their electric cars. Those that came in early worked on their cars before school began. Students are encouraged to come to school early, 8 am, to give them more time to work on their science fair projects.

Students attended French and math class today. In math, they took up the review questions with Ms. Joseph They discussed questions on nets, 3D views, area and perimeter of squares and rectangles, and surface area and volume of rectangular prisms. While solving a problem, students are reminded to write the formula, substitute the values and give the correct answer with the units. The unit test will be written tomorrow, Thursday, November 7th.

Hot lunch payments are to be made through QuickBooks by November 6th.

Our collection of ‘Lost and Found’ items is piling up. Please make some time to come into the school building and a look through the lost and found items. These are now located in the GYM. On November 8th at 4pm all left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.

Please send in newspapers if you have any. We need these for a Papier-mâché project we will be working on during this unit.

The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring a charged device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You have one hour to write the test. This month’s test includes an interactive question. The interactive question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2 to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to 10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving triangles for Grades 11/12.  You can practice these now on Caribou’s Games page. Let Caribou know if you have any problems with the games.  Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing yourselves with these games before the contest.  Because certain games pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday morning, November 12th, (start of the contest in the far East) to Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.  For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether. Students in these grades should read the relevant section of Caribou’s History page in your preferred language to prepare.

After-care payments for October are now due and should be paid by November 15th, 2019.

There is no school for students on Friday as teachers will be participating in professional development activities.

There is no school on Monday to allow staff and families to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies at their local cenotaphs. Students are encouraged to wear a poppy in the days leading up to Remembrance Day.
