Christmas Concert Choreography

Our day before the long weekend began with an extended assembly. We received a house point update and learned that Zeta is in the lead for the house cup, Kappa is in second place, and Theta is closing the gap between itself and Kappa. We had a couple of house games. The first was an egg and spoon race for students in JK- Grade 5. The second was an egg and spoon race for students in Grade 6, but with teachers placed as obstacles that they needed to climb over or under. Well done to Theta for winning the younger game and to Zeta for winning the older game, and to all students for cheering on their teams.

We took time to think about Remembrance Day. Ms. Hocevar and her students prepared a presentation for Lower School students and we took a moment of silence to think about their message and the significance of this day.

Today was our scheduled time to work with a choreographer for our Christmas concert performance. We had a great time working with Ms. Lauren, who, students learned, had worked for Disney and had played the role of Elsa. Great attitude during this time, Grade 6s!

Due to this rehearsal, we did not have language time and students only had a few minutes of French with Mme. Stella. Students wrote their math unit test during their math time with Ms. Joseph.

We used the remaining class time for science fair. Four students have now completed the project in its entirety and have begun practicing their presentation to the judges while referring the judge’s scoring card. Students also used first recess to work on their electric cars. Those that came in early worked on their cars before school began. Students are encouraged to come to school early, 8 am, to give them more time to work on their science fair projects.

Finally, students attended gym at the end of the day.

With the busyness of the day, I forgot to tell the class to dress for our hot air balloon Papier-mâché project on Tuesday. This will be a very messy task. They should wear old clothes that they don’t mind getting messed up with paste which is hard to wash out. Please send in newspapers if you have any.

The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring a charged device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You have one hour to write the test. This month’s test includes an interactive question. The interactive question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2 to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to 10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving triangles for Grades 11/12.  You can practice these now on Caribou’s Games page. Let Caribou know if you have any problems with the games.  Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing yourselves with these games before the contest.  Because certain games pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday morning, November 12th, (start of the contest in the far East) to Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.  For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether. Students in these grades should read the relevant section of Caribou’s History page in your preferred language to prepare.

After-care payments for October are now due and should be paid by November 15th, 2019.

There is no school for students on Friday as teachers will be participating in professional development activities.

There is no school on Monday to allow staff and families to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies at their local cenotaphs. Students are encouraged to wear a poppy in the days leading up to Remembrance Day.

Please read the letter from Oakwood Academy, our sister school:

Dear Oakwood and St. Jude’s Families,

We will be celebrating World Kindness Day on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019! Created in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, this unofficial holiday encourages people to spread happiness, joy, and peace through kindness. The Oakwood and St. Jude’s community will be creating a Kindness Rainbow around the school representing inclusiveness towards all students. Students will be able to purchase 3 paper chain links for $2 to write words of kindness or draw a picture on. They will return the links to be added to the Kindness Rainbow. All participating students will also be able to dress in casual clothes for the day! If you wish to participate in this event, please fill out the form below and return with $2 by Tuesday November 12 th, 2019.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact: Erica Brunet ebrunet@oakwoodacademy.ca or Razia Aziz raziz@oakwoodacademy.ca.
