Students had
the opportunity to review Bernoulli’s Principle once last time before the test.
They participated in a Carousel activity where they used drawings, labels, and an
oral explanation to describe Bernoulli’s Principle and lift in an airfoil to a
friend. The friend used a checklist to ensure that all criteria were met and
then gave the student feedback. Students then switched places in this activity.
Students then wrote their test on Bernoulli’s Principle.
Later in the
day we had more inquiry time. Our learning goal was to design and test a flying
device. This was done at different stations that we called ‘Airports’. At each
station, students were to try get their planes to perform different tasks,
i.e., fly over 5 m, perform a trick/turn, and hit a target. Students were
required to perform these tests safely. At the end, students placed their plane
at the station it performed best at. Students examined the planes at the
various stations and inferred which features helped the planes with being
successful at those tasks.
Students
used first recess to work on their electric cars. We now have 11 moving cars!
We are quickly running out of time as science fair is next week. Students are
encouraged to come to school early, 8 am, to give them more time to work on
their science fair projects.
We began
exploring fables and legends, which are this term’s narrative writing form. We
read examples of these types of writing that were written by students. We have
started a list that represents what was done well in these writing pieces. This
will help students when they work on their own fable/legend. We are also
wondering about the difference between a fable and a legend. Students are to
look this up and share their findings with the class.
Grade 6s
attended French and math class today. In math, students took
up Friday’s homework with Ms. Joseph. They then worked on calculating the
volume of rectangular prisms. The volume of a rectangular prism is calculated
as base area x height or length x width x height. V = Base Area x h or V= lwh.
They discussed practice questions from the textbook. For homework they are to complete
questions 1a, 1b, 2b/2c and 3. The tentative day for the unit test is Thursday,
November 7th.
Hot lunch payments are to be made through QuickBooks by November 6th.
Our collection of ‘Lost and Found’ items is piling up. Please make some
time to come into the school building and a look through the lost and found
items. These are now located in the GYM. On November 8th at 4pm
all left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.
Please send in newspapers if you have any. We need these for a Papier-mâché project we will be working on during this
unit.
Curling permission forms and waivers are past due tomorrow. Please return
these ASAP as we are curling tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5th.
A number of parents have expressed an interest in attending the trip to the
Canadian Warplane museum. We already have enough parent volunteers, but I
understand the increased interest as it is a lovely place to visit. Parents who
would like, may attend if they are willing to pay the entry fee once we arrive
at the museum. You are still required to have a vulnerable sector check on file
in order to travel and be with students while on the trip. I believe there will
be sufficient space on the bus for parents to travel with us. Let me know if
this is something you would like to do.
The next Caribou Contest takes place on Wednesday, November 13th,
2019. Participants are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. Bring a charged
device, preferably a laptop, iPad or Tablet. You have one hour to write the
test. This month’s test includes an interactive question. The interactive
question will differ by grade: Tangram for Grades 2 to 4, Chomp for Grades 5 to
10, and finally a GeomeTree construction involving triangles for Grades
11/12. You can practice these now on Caribou’s Games page. Let
Caribou know if you have any problems with the games. Caribou strongly recommends familiarizing
yourselves with these games before the contest. Because certain games
pages can be used to solve the questions, these will be blocked from Tuesday
morning, November 12th, (start of the contest in the far East) to
Thursday evening, November 15th at 8 pm EST.
For Grades 3 to 12, there will be a history question about Emmy Noether.
Students in these grades should read the relevant section of Caribou’s
History page in your preferred language to prepare.
After-care payments for October are now due and should be paid by November
15th, 2019.
Students are to come to school dressed in their gym uniform for tomorrow’s
curling trip. They require a helmet to participate, gloves, and a warm jacket
or sweater/hoodie.
There is no school for students on Friday as teachers will be participating
in professional development activities.
There is no school on Monday to allow staff and families to attend
Remembrance Day ceremonies at their local cenotaphs. Students are encouraged to
wear a poppy in the days leading up to Remembrance Day.
