We used the
first part of our inquiry time to take up last week’s energy unit test. I
discussed the marking scheme for each question and how marks were allocated for
each response. Please take time to review the test with your child, sign it,
and return it to school tomorrow.
Students
then had time to work on their electric cars. They kept me busy with poking
holes in wheels, cutting axels, and providing them with needed materials. Once
student in the class got to the stage of testing her car today. We will have
time to build again on Wednesday.
We used some
of our language time to begin learning about limericks. Students read samples
of limericks and then generated criteria about the form of these poems. The
class did pretty well with their ideas. Ask your child to tell you what these
criteria are.
We had novel
study time today. Students met in groups to discuss Chapter 10 of The City of Ember. There was no time for
reading in class. Students should read Chapter 11 and complete their response for
homework. Our next discussion takes place on tomorrow.
Students
attended French, music, gym, and math classes today. In math, students took up the homework on
ratios. They were then introduced to equivalent ratios. Students are reminded
that equivalent ratios are equal, that they can be found by multiplying or
dividing the terms of the ratio by the same number, and that a ratio in
simplest form is when its terms have no common factors. Students practiced some
problems involving equivalent fractions. For homework, students are to complete
Q. 1- 5 on page 52.
The class continued
to work on their summative task for our energy unit. Today’s goal was for
everyone to complete slides and write their cue cards. Many groups are far
behind with this work, as they are still working on researching and completing
their graphic organizers. These groups used second recess and lunch to get
caught up. All groups were asked to regularly check in with me to show me their
progress and to get feedback on the quality of their work. Students needed to
get the ‘go ahead’ from me before proceeding to their slides. Students will be
presenting their work on Wednesday or Thursday this week.
Students
should continue their research on Madagascar. Remember to research and prepare
a traditional dish from Madagascar for International Day. Let me know when you
have decided on a dish.
Friday is a
PD Day for teachers. There is no school for students. Students are required to
wear their winter uniform on Tuesday after the long weekend.
