We continued
exploring Canada’s connections to the world in our inquiry unit. We reviewed
our learning goal from last week: Increase in knowledge of the names and
locations of countries in the world. For fun, we watched Jimmy Kimmel’s Name that
Country Clip. We have been discussing why IB students need to know
about the world. We made up some lost time due to yesterday’s snow day by
working during recess time. Students were introduced to today’s learning goal: Define the key aspects of a country/region by
its physical, economic, political, and social features & Define and
understand the terms trade, import and export. They began with an activity
called ‘Fun with Photos’. Students worked in a group to categorise an assortment
of photos as PEPS (physical, economic, political, and social). They repeated
this activity four times over and became more successful with each attempt.
They increased their conceptual understanding of these terms as we went.
Students chose sample photos and explained why they had categorised them as they
had. As a class, we used student understanding to define these terms.
Students
then shared the results of their ‘Global Connections Treasure Hunt’. We added a
pin in our class world map to any new countries that were shared. We then discussed
and defined trade, imports, and exports. We played a Global Connections game,
where each student represented a product that was exported from one country to
another. The connections between countries were represented with yarn. This was
a noisy, fun activity. I hope it helped students become better aware of the
connections between countries.
For homework, students are to complete the ‘Canada’s
Trading Partners’ map work and Mapping
our World: Lesson 3. Devices are needed for tomorrow’s inquiry class.
Next we worked
on our Viking longboat projects. Today students pasted their waves below their
sky scene.
Students had
gym, French and math class at the end of the day. In math, students were
introduced to classifying figures. They discussed the properties of polygons
and regular polygons and the differences between convex and concave polygons.
They practiced questions from the textbook. For homework students are to complete
the worksheet. Math tests need to be signed and returned.
Re-registration packages are past due. Please send these in as soon as
