We continued
exploring Canada’s connections to the world in our new inquiry unit. Students
received the second page of their Global Connections Treasure Hunt. Please
complete these for tomorrow’s class. Next we read a story about The Global Kid. The reader was
interrupted by classmates who explained how products in the story came from
countries around the globe. We did this activity twice, listing the countries
and products on the second round. We checked the locations of these countries
on our class map and added pins if they were not already pinned. Students need
to be able to identify and locate all pinned countries for their unit test.
Students worked on a mapping activity where they created a legend for the
continents and coloured the continents as per the legend. They also added the
cardinal directions, oceans, major lines of latitude and longitude and coloured
seas, oceans, bays, and lakes in blue. Finally, we watched a video about
different map projections by Peters and Mercato. Students are growing in their
understanding of the advantages of the different maps and the inaccuracies
produced when representing the continents of a 3-D object spherical object (the
Earth) on a 2-D object (a map). Students are to complete the rest of the Mapping
our World: Lesson 2 for homework.
Next we had
art and worked on our Viking longboat projects. Today students worked on their longboats,
sails, and seas. They used a tearing technique to divide up their seas into
waves.
Students had
gym, French and math class at the end of the day. In math, students
practiced questions on sketching a triangle:
- when 3 sides are given using a ruler and
compass
- when 1 side and 2 angles are given using a ruler
and protractor.
Students are reminded to line up the protractor
correctly. For homework, complete questions 3 & 4 from the worksheet.
Students received their math unit tests. These need to be signed by parents and
returned to school by tomorrow.
Re-registration packages are past due. Please send these in as soon as
possible. We look forward to seeing you back for next year!
