Canada in the World

We began our day beginning a new unit of inquiry. Students were introduced to the theme, central idea, key concepts, lines of inquiry, and summative tasks.

How we organize ourselves

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Title: Canada in the World

Central Idea: A nation’s foreign policies influences how it interacts on the international stage.

Key Concepts: Causation, Connection

Lines of Inquiry:

·         Our country’s economic, political, social, and physical links with other countries

·         The role and impact of our significant people and leaders in the world

·         Our role in the international community

As IB students, it is important for us know about the world and Canada’s connections to the world. We began exploring these connections through a game of Globingo.

Once the game was over, students shared connections we have to countries in the world. The student sharing this information named the student, the connection, and the country. They then located the country on the class world map and inserted a pin into the map. We will be inserting more pins into the map as we progress through this unit. Students will be required to identify each pinned country when they write the unit test. The date of the test will be announced soon. Students will be exploring this connection further by conducting a ‘Global Connections Treasure Hunt’ at home. The treasure hunt sheet is due on Monday. Finally, we began exploring 3-D and 2-D map projections. We did this using OXFAM Mapping the World Lesson 1 link. Students are asked to explore Lesson 1 on their own.

Next we attended the Speech contest. We got to hear the Grade 7 & 8 speeches too. Congratulations to all students participating. Well done to Christiaan, Dolapo, and David for place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.

Students had French and math class at the end of the day. In math, students took up the test with Ms. Joseph. The tests are not coming home yet. They worked on the pre-assessment task for the next math unit.

Look out for Term 2 DRA graphs coming home today. Graduation and sibling Picture Day forms are coming home today too.

Re-registration packages are due by Monday, February 11.  After this time, spots will be opened up to the public and your child will not be guaranteed a space for next year.  We look forward to seeing you back for next year!

The next Caribou contest will take place on Wednesday February 13th, 2019. Please arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. You will have one hour to complete the test. Bring your own device. Ensure your device is full charged.  The interactive question will be Sudoku which you students can practice now on the Caribou games page. There is no history question in the coming contest.
