Static Electricity

Day 1

Our day began with UOI time which was a change for us. Students worked on their electricity test. Once that was done they finished up describing the electric car challenge, taking care to do so in detail and including all the features that car should have and all components that must be completed for science fair. Students who have not yet completed their IB portfolio covers worked on those. We ended this session of UOI time with Kaaya`s presentation on creativity. One of Kaaya`s examples of a creative person was Emily Carr. She also asked the class to share examples of creativity in their lives. Thank you, Kaaya.

In math we continued working on whole numbers. We took up yesterday’s homework. Today`s lesson was about multiplication involving a 2-digit and a 3-digit number. Students shared their strategies for this kind of multiplication. We discussed solving problems using mental math, breaking numbers apart, and place value. Whatever method students choose to use, they should remember to always show their work clearly. We also reviewed the differences between linear measures, area measures, and volume measures. We used the formula for area to find areas of figures. Grade 6s are asked to complete practice questions on p. 66 - 67 of the MMS textbook. Grade 6s will be writing a whole numbers unit test on Wednesday, September 28.

In our next UOI session time, we explored static electricity. The class had a lot fun using balloons to understand static charges. To understand static electricity we had to review the structure of an atom. Ask your child to explain why negative charges move, but not positive charges.

At the end of the day we had more UOI time. We began exploring electromagnets. Some groups completed their building of an electromagnet. Groups who did not get done will do this in class tomorrow.

Students attended French class today.
