Series and Parallel Circuits

Day 9

We started our week with a presentation from the Terry Fox Foundation. Christina spoke to the school about the foundation’s mission and shared her own story on being a Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. Students are asked to begin collecting pledges and donations for this great cause.

In math we continued working on whole numbers. We took up Friday’s homework. We then began our next lesson on order of operations. We used an expression that involved addition, multiplication, and subtraction. We solved this expression as a class and discovered that depending on the order we did it in, we got 4 different solutions. The class understood that we need rules about the order in which we do operations to ensure we find the correct solution. We discussed BEDMAS, BOMDAS, and BODMAS as ways to remember the order. Ask your child to explain the order we should use. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 56 - 57 of the MMS textbook.

Next up was UOI time. Husmeen shared her presentation on what it means to be tolerant with clear explanations on how we are tolerant and respectful of other languages, beliefs, values, etc. However, we are not tolerant of bullying or being taken advantage of by people. It is important to seek help or stand up for yourself in some situations. Thank you, Husmeen.

We then took up the work students did in class on Friday during UOI time with circuit symbols and diagrams. We investigated the similarities and differences between series and parallel circuits next. Students did this by constructing these types of circuits, and then taking note of the number of pathways for electricity to flow and how unhooking one bulb affects the other bulb. Ask your child to contrast and compare these circuits for you.

Ian, Avneet, and Farah showed extra enthusiasm by staying in during second recess to build a parallel circuit with 3 bulbs, where each bulb is controlled by its own switch. Well done, you three!

Sai has been building electric circuits at home. He brought one of his circuits to share his learning with his classmates.

Next up in UOI time, we discussed the final project for this unit which is also the science fair project for our class. Please look for a letter about the science fair in your child`s binder. We discussed the task and expectations as a group. Students had many questions which we took the time to address in class. Have a look at the engineering design portfolio your child will be working through. For now, your child can be collecting a box (e.g. a shoe box) and some of the suggested materials as well as generating ideas for their car designs. The class is very excited to begin working on this project.

We were meant to complete work on troubleshooting electrical problems today, but our science fair discussion took up a lot of class time. Students will have class time tomorrow to finish this work up.

Please remember that Grade 6s will be writing a test on Wednesday, September 21, on all we have learned so far in our electricity UOI. Students should review and study from all the UOI notes in their binders, including today`s work.

Students attended French and Gym classes today.
