Insulators & Conductors

Day 5
Grade 6s had French class with Mme. Stella first thing this morning. Three students worked on their reading assessment instead of attending French and gym.

In math we continued working on whole numbers. We took up yesterday’s homework. We then began our next lesson on multiples. The lesson went pretty quickly today. Students wrote lists of multiples and found common multiples in both lists. They used this strategy to solve problems involving multiples. The class had over 30 minutes of class time to begin today’s practice work. A few students managed to get all the practice work done in class – well done! Students are asked to complete all practice questions on p. 44 of the MMS textbook.

We began our UOI time by being an audience to Farah’s presentation on what it means to be reflective. Farah led a class discussion where many students shared experiences abut when they had done something wrong in the past, felt bad about it, and then made a way to make things right. We discussed how being reflective also involves our school work, and how we consider our areas of strength and weaknesses, and ways that we can improve. Thank you, Farah!

Yesterday, while building circuits during UOI time, Jacob wondered what was in a battery. He did some research and shared his findings with the class. As a result the class heard the terms anode, cathode, and electrolyte. We started using some of these terms in our investigations today. Well done on being an inquirer, Jacob!

The main part of UOI time was spent exploring conductors and insulators. We wondered what the words insulator and conductor mean. We also wondered which materials are conductors and which are insulators. Students built a testing device as a group. They made predictions on whether materials provided would allow electricity to flow and a bulb to go on. They then tested the materials provided to determine if they were insulators or conductors. As a bonus students tested other materials in the classroom. We ended this lesson by using our investigation to answer the questions we had.

At the end of the day, we continued working on UOI by discussing the IB student portfolio. This is a binder that holds student work from each unit of inquiry. Students will add work samples to the binder at the end of each UOI. The binders are stored at school and go home for parents to view at the same time as report cards. Students read and discussed the essential agreement regarding the IB portfolio. They also worked on creating a cover page for the portfolio.

Look out for four after-school program forms coming home today in your child’s agenda.

Forms for the welcome BBQ are due tomorrow.
