Day 8
It was
wonderful seeing everyone at the BBQ yesterday!
This morning
in math we continued working on whole numbers. We took up yesterday’s homework.
We then began our next lesson on using mental math strategies. We took time in
class to name, describe, and practice breaking numbers apart and rearranging
numbers in order to work with compatible numbers. Students were disappointed not
to be able to compute a problem in their heads and record the final answer.
This is good practice for the unit test where they will need to demonstrate the
use of mental math strategies by showing all the steps they take in their heads.
Students are asked to complete practice
questions (a, c, e) on p. 51 - 52 of the MMS textbook.
Next up was
UOI time. Students read about symbols and definitions for the components of
electrical circuits. They practiced drawing the symbols of electric circuit
components and summarised the definitions of the components from their
informational text. Students then used their learning to draw circuit diagrams
from written circuit description. Grade 6s will be writing a test on Wednesday,
September 21, on all we have learned so far in our electricity UOI. Students
should review and study from all the UOI notes in their binders.
Leah used
our next UOI time slot to share her presentation on what it means to a
risk-taker. She shared examples of famous people and family members who were risk
takers. She then led the class in a discussion on what they think it means to
be a risk-taker. Thank you, Leah!
Your child
should be bringing their gym uniform home today. Please take time this weekend
to label all uniform items. Ms. Nelson is going to be doing a surprise
inspection soon. She has promised a pizza party to the class who has most
uniform pieces labelled. We are hoping to win that pizza party.
Look out for
October hot lunch order forms and Terry Fox Run letters coming home today.
