Welcome back everyone. We had a productive and enjoyable
first day back as you will see below.
Grade 6s attended Art class with Ms. Kerr and Gym class with
Mr. Slyk this morning.
After gym, we had
a quick catch-up time about the holidays. We then discussed International Day
which is coming up later this month. As a class we brainstormed ideas for our
display. Students have been asked to further think of ideas to making an
interesting display.
In math time, we
began a new unit on measurement. Today’s lesson was about time zones. We
discussed why time zones are needed. This required a review of map work and
Canada’s provinces and territories. Students then examined winter and summer
time zones in Canada and calculated the time in particular location in relation
to the time in another location. For homework, students should complete practice
questions on p. 208 of the MMS textbook.
Next up was
writing time. Students worked on writing an expository paragraph that met
certain criteria on a topic of their choosing.
During UOI time,
students handed in their one-point perspective drawings they worked o over the
holidays. It was time to begin learning and practicing a new art technique – tessellations.
Most students in our class are not familiar with this art form. We viewed
samples of tessellation artwork that inspired us. We then watched a tutorial on
how to make an original template for a rotating tessellation. Students then
worked on creating their template. The cutting out was tricky work. Some began
tracing their template.
