Day 1 – Trapezoids

The day began very early for students participating in the Caribou Math Contest. We are happy to report that we had no technical difficulties as students worked on the math test. Students have received their access codes. They can use these codes to check their results tonight. The next contest is a month away. Students are encouraged to visit the Caribou website and try the practice tests in the meantime.

We began today with an assembly where we were the audience as some of our students received their karate awards and belts. We have also heard that the Silent Dance and Oakwood bake sale raised $1456.25. Our friends at Oakwood extend their gratitude. The money raised will be used to purchase sensory gym equipment.

We began our academic day with math. Today we learned how to find the area and perimeter of a trapezoid. We did this in three ways. We decomposed the trapezoid into 1) two triangles, 2) one triangle and a parallelogram, and 3) two triangles and a rectangle. Mr. Rozario joined in on our lesson and suggested that there was a fourth way to do this. Ask your child to explain what Mr. Rozario taught us. Students are asked to complete MMS 7 p. 129 – 132 if they did not get done in class today.

We continued working on exhibition for the remainder of the day. I finished up meeting with groups about their questions, central idea, and lines of inquiry. Our focus is now securing the primary source site visit and/or interview. Students need to finalise their interview questions and have these approved by teachers, mentors, and/or parents. The discrimination group has 4 interviews taking place this week. The child neglect group has an interview taking place on Friday. Another priority is the action ideas and planning, and to keep researching to answer all concept questions and address all lines of inquiry.

Ms. Hayward will be running a MLA citation workshop with the Grade 6 class on Friday after second lunch. Groups are requested not to schedule mentor meetings, interviews, or site visits during this time. The information Ms. Hayward will present is important as groups will need to use MLA citations in their essays.

Mr. Oliver joined our class today to support students with their exhibition work.

The Grade 6s attended French and gym class today.

Students are reminded to return their rock climbing trip forms.
