Day 8
Our day
began with math. We took up yesterday’s homework on dividing decimals by 10,
100, 1000, and 10 000. Many students said that they had difficulty converting
measures – they were unsure when to divide by 10, 100, 1000 or 10 000. We took
time to develop a conceptual understanding of linear measure relationships. Students
used the thickness of their fingernail to represent 1mm, the width of their
pinky finger to represent I cm, their hand span to represent 1 dm, and the
distance from their fingertip of their extended arm to the opposite shoulder to
represent 1 m. We discussed how the metric systems is based on 10:
10 mm = 1 cm
10 cm = 1 dm
10 dm = 1m
10 m = 1 dam
10 dam = 1 hm
10 hm = 1 km
We used the
pneumonic King Henry Died a Miserable Death Called Measles to convert between
the metric units. When converting a small unit (e.g. mm) to a larger unit (e.g.
m) students divide, but when converting a larger unit (e.g. km) to a smaller
unit (e.g. cm) students multiply. Some students feel they understand this a bit
better now, but many still feel this is an area of weakness for them. Students
are encouraged to keep practicing this skill. We then did today’s lesson on multiplying
whole numbers by 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001. This is the same as dividing by 10, 100,
and 1000 respectively. Students used the same strategy that they did yesterday
i.e., moving the digits to the right or the decimal to the left depending on
the number of zeros in 10, 100, and 1000. Students are asked to complete
practice work on p. 144 - 145 of the MMS textbook.
We did not
have time for novel study today due to our extended math lesson. There is no
reading or response assigned for homework today.
The
remainder of the day looked very similar to yesterday. The class either worked
on their OWA or on their Canada’s Trading Partners brochure. Students that have
not completed their brochure research are asked to complete it for homework
today.
Students
spent first recess working on their science fair project.
The class attended
gym, music, and French class today.
I am still
waiting on some groups to send me their Canada’s exports video. Students who
have not completed the video yet spent second recess working with their partner
in an effort to complete this work. Students that have uploaded their video to
YouTube should email me the link at mhaag@stjudesacademy.com.
Students are reminded of the UOI test tomorrow, November 18. The test will
cover Canada and its Trading Partners, and Canada and the USA. The test will also
include map work about Canada’s trading partners, continents, and oceans.
The soccer
girls are bringing home a letter from Ms. Lopez.
