Day 6
Lost jacket: A student in our class has lost their SJA winter jacket. It is rainproof on the outside and fleecy on the inside. Please check to see if your child has mistakenly taken it home. Thanks.Grade 6s began their day with math – finally. We took up last Tuesday’s homework on adding and subtracting decimals and then did today’s lesson on multiplying decimals by 10, 100, 1000, and 10 000. We used a place-value chart to do this. Students learned that they can do this by either moving the digits to the left or the decimal to the right depending on the number of zeros in 10, 100, 1000, or 10 000. Students are asked to complete practice work on p. 139 of the MMS textbook.
The class
then attended gym with Mr. Slyk. After gym we had novel study time. Students
discussed chapters 11 to 13 in their literature circle groups. Everyone was
assigned a new role and received a little class time to read some of chapter 14.
We will have novel study time again tomorrow. Everyone should complete their
chapter 14 reading and response for homework.
For UOI, six
groups have now sent me their Canada’s exports video. Students who have not completed
the video yet spent second recess working with their partner in an effort to
complete this work. Students that have uploaded their video to YouTube should
email me the link at mhaag@stjudesacademy.com.
We took up Friday’s work on Canada’s trading partners. Students then began working
on learning more about Canada and its main trading partner – the USA. Students
are asked to complete these pages (p. 37 – 40) for homework if they did not get
done in class. Students are reminded of the UOI test on Friday, November 18. The
test will cover Canada and its Trading Partners, and Canada and the USA. The
test will also include map work about Canada’s trading partners, continents,
and oceans.
The class
then headed to French with Mme. Stella. When they returned from French, they heard
all about their next UOI project. Students have chosen a country that is one of
Canada’s trading partners to research about. They will need their devices daily
to conduct their internet research. Once their research is completed, they will
create a brochure using Microsoft Publisher or other software. The brochure is
to be from the perspective of the foreign trading partner with a goal of
attracting Canadians to purchase their goods and services or to travel to their
country to enjoy the physical beauty or social attractions. Students will be
recording their research in a graphic organiser. They have checklists to help
ensure they have collected all required information. Students had some class
time today to begin their research. Students will be researching the following
countries.
