The Grade 6
class looked very smart in their winter uniform today. Well done to so many who
made an effort to wear all required pieces. We clarified some misunderstandings
about the uniform. The biggest one is that students must wear either a sweater
or vest under their blazer.
Grade 6s
began their day attending French class with Mme. Stella.
In math we
took up Thursday’s homework on solving equations before beginning a new lesson
on integers. We took time to understand the definition of an integer – a number
with size and direction using examples that involved money, altitude/depth, and
temperature. The definition made a lot more sense in the context of these
examples. Students had some class time to begin work on the practice problems. Students
are asked to complete practice work on p. 22 of the MMS textbook. Students will
be writing the Number Patterns unit test on Monday, October 17.
Next up was language
time. We read samples of fable/legend writing. Students added strengths and
areas for improvement to their T-charts. We discussed each sample as a class.
Students felt that today’s writing samples were worthy of a level 3 and 4.
Students
attended gym class with Mr. Slyk. When they got back it was UOI time. Bibi
presented what it means to show respect. We had an enjoyable class discussion
during this time. The remaining time before recess was used to work on the
slideshow on the environmental impact of energy production. Some students did
not have a Prezi account, nor an email account, nor PowerPoint or similar
software for today’s class. These students are asked to set up these accounts
tonight and be ready to work with their partners on Thursday. Thursday is the
last day that we can allocate class time to this project. Recess time will have
to be used after this date to get the project completed. Students need their
devices (and access to software) again on Thursday.
Students who
have not completed their electric safety poster worked on these during second
recess.
It was
finally the time of day that everyone has been looking forward to – building our
electric cars. Needless to say there was an amazing hum as students worked. It
was very messy but also very productive. I am sorry to say I left my camera at
home so I don’t have pictures to share with you. I hope to do this on Thursday.
Students got much further with their building in 1 hour than I thought they
could. Well done!
I will be
away tomorrow. Ms. Barros will be covering my class for me. The Grade 6s know
what they are expected to do tomorrow. I look forward to seeing how much gets
done on the cars when I am back on Thursday.
