Christopher Columbus

Sorry for the late post.

Yesterday in math, we worked on making multiple transformations on a figure. Students drew the figures and images on grid paper. They recorded the positions of the vertices using coordinates and named the vertices using the prime, double prime, or even triple prime notation. Students discovered that accuracy was greatly increased when they traced the original figure onto tracing paper and manipulated the tracing accordingly. We made good progress with the practice questions in class. Students are asked to finish up the remaining questions on p. 254 & 255 for homework. Students are bringing home their measurement retest. Please take time to review the test with your child, sign it, and return it to school.

We then worked on our inquiry unit. We reviewed the reasons for European exploration and finished up our lesson on Portuguese explorers. Students are bringing home their Vikings test.

Students then met in literature circle groups to discuss chapter 7 of Copper Sunrise. They had class time to read chapter 8 and complete their reflections of chapter 8.

Students attended French and Drama class.

Due to the class time being missed as result of special events, Grade 6s were kept out of gym to catch up on inquiry work. We used this time to learn about Spanish explorers. Students are brining home a worksheet that they need to complete at home. They will need to research some of the goals and challenges that Christopher Columbus faced in his voyages to the Americas. Ask your child what they learned in this lesson. We will begin working on our summative projects for this unit text week. Students will be creating a website. They will need access to a device where they can perform research as well as create the website. They are asked to bring a device to school all next week, except Wednesday.

Have a wonderful weekend.
