Aboriginal Perspectives

We began our day working on our new inquiry unit. First we made progress on our personal identities. I gave the class an example of what my personal identity would look like if a recorded it on a mind map. Students then worked on their personal identity mind maps which included branches such as Where I live, Where I come from, Foods I enjoy, etc. Students were asked to consider yesterday’s question “Who was the first person/people that discovered the Americas? How did they get here?” They were presented with an Aboriginal origin story called The Earth on Turtles Back. They were asked the question again and asked if they would change, keep, or modify their original answer if given the chance. They then read two more origin stories compared the stories in terms of symbolism, moral, items from nature, and how the Earth was formed. Students were asked to consider what the Aboriginal perspective would be if asked the same question. Students are asked to reflect on their own or their family’s views on the origin of people. Your child will be asking you this question tomorrow and sharing their ideas with the class tomorrow if they feel comfortable doing so.
We discussed the Prologue, and Chapters 1 & 2 of Tuck Everlasting during today’s novel study time. Students have been assigned the following reading: Chapters 3 & 4. They need to complete discussion pages 13 – 19 in the study guide. This work is due tomorrow. Any incomplete novel study work needs to be completed as homework.

We had recess and lunch before heading to another enjoyable afternoon of curling.

When we got back some time on our Christmas concert performance. Both teams need to work on developing more moves.

Remember to use the Pick-A-Time information to book student-led conference times. Conferences take place on Thursday, December 6th. Grade 6 students are required to attend.

Forms and payment for the SJA Parent Guild Fun Skate event are due this Friday.
