Insulators and Conductors

During today’s inquiry time, students watched a video about electricity and took notes. They learned many interesting facts such as the number of volts and temperature of a lightning strike, how a van der Graf generator works, and what causes the Aurora Borealis.

Next, they conducted an investigation to determine if the materials they were supplied with conducted electricity. First they followed instructions to build a testing device. The light bulb lighting up was evidence that the material allowed electricity to flow, and if the material did not allow electricity to flow the bulb would not light up. Ask your child to tell you which materials were conductors or insulators and what happened when they add additional salt to their water. Students are reminded to need to bring in $15 for their supplies and a shoe box to store their cars by Monday, September 17th.

In language we continued learning about similes as literary devices. Students finished up learning what they are and when and why writers use them. Finally, students began writing their own similes.

Grade 6s attended math, gym, and French class today. Mme. Stella has assigned French homework on accents.

In Math, Grade 6s reviewed collecting data and the importance of unbiased survey questions. They completed a worksheet practicing these concepts. Ms. Joseph has assigned math homework out of the MMS 7 textbook, P. 171 Q.  5 & 7

Learner Profile posters are past due.
