Grade 6s continued
learning about decimals in math class. Today students practiced using order of
operations with decimals. This was tricky work. A common error many made was to
only record the numbers and operations that had been solved on the next line,
instead of all numbers and operations in their correct order. Students know
that they will lose points on a test if they do this. In order to give everyone the opportunity to consolidate
this learning the decimal’s unit test is will take place one day later, i.e.
Tuesday, November 14th. Students are asked to complete p. 92 - 93 of
their MMS 7 for homework if they did not get done in class. They are also asked
to complete review questions 8, 9, 10 on p. 96 for homework. All previous
decimals work must be complete and corrected.
We continued
working on the Polar Expressions writing contest as a class. We reviewed the
basic elements of a story and the requirements of the competition. Students used
their planning ideas from yesterday and worked on writing their stories.
During
today’s inquiry time students continued working on one of their summative
projects for this unit. They are creating a video commercial of one of Canada’s
provinces or territories using the Physical, Economic, Political, and Social
(PEPS) features of the province or territory to attract newcomers. Today’s goal
was to add all images, captions, and titles to their video. The groups are at
varying points of progress. Some are still working on storyboards, others are
arranging images, some are working on recording their narration, and a couple
have completed their entire project and sent me the link. Any groups that are
behind in their work did not get to go out for second recess and used this time
to try get caught up. Devices are needed until this project is complete. The
video needs to be uploaded to YouTube once it is complete. One partner in each
group needs a YouTube account.
At the end
of the day, students heard about their art project that ties in with our Canada
in the World inquiry unit. They will be exploring how Canadian artists
represent Canada’s landscape. They will then select a Canadian landscape to
paint on canvas. Students should begin browsing images for this project. The
image must be a photograph (can be online) of an aspect of a Canadian region.
In today’s class we saw how several artists portrayed different parts of Canada’s
regions using different styles of art.
Some students chose to work on their cars during second
lunch today.
Please
return curling permission forms by Monday. Remember to bring a toonie and dress
in casual clothes for Kindness Day on Monday. Picture orders are due on
Tuesday.
Dear SJA
Families,
Kindness Day
is celebrated nationwide annually, on the 13th of November. It is a
day to celebrate and promote kindness in all its forms. World Kindness Day
falls on the same day and unites people in kindness globally.
On November
13th, St. Jude's Academy is celebrating World Kindness Day by encouraging
all students to share kind words to each other and unite as a whole
school with their neighbours at Oakwood. By bringing in $2,
students can participate in a special World Kindness Day event by writing
a kind message or quote on a leaf and then post it on our World Kindness
Tree for all to see. In addition to sharing their kind
words, they will be supporting their neighbours at Oakwood
and also be allowed to dress casually.
As part of a
united world school, IB learners strive to be kind every day. This
year, we are looking forward to emphasizing and celebrating acts of
kindness on Monday, November 13th and we hope everyone is able
to participate in our World Kindness Day events!
