RSA Animate - The Planning and Dress Rehearsal

Our day began with students writing their unit test for Patterns in Number and Geometry.

Grade 6s then attended music class with Mr. Andrei.

Once everyone was back from music we had a great discussion about the assigned reading for Friday and the weekend from Tuck Everlasting. Please read chapters 18, 19, and 20 and complete the discussion questions for these chapters. We did not have enough class time for students to complete the reading at school.

After recess, everyone worked on the next step of their RSA animate. Students chose 10 facts they want to teach the class about the organization they have chosen. They recorded these on 10 steps. They then had to come up with 3 doodles for each of their 10 facts. They recorded these doodles below the step for each fact. Students were challenged to make sure that each step connected to the step before it.

Grade 6s attended gym class with Mr. Slyk.

The primary and junior sections of the Inter-school speech competition against The Maples Academy takes place tomorrow. It will begin at 9:30 am. All are Welcome!

Below is a message from the MYP team:

Good day and good morrow fair lords and ladies;

The MYP beseeches you to attend their amendable performance of Billy the Bard’s Merchant of Venice, colloquially retitled The Merchant of Manhattan. In fair New York we lay our scene; 6 suitors strive to win the hand of the divine socialite: Portia. One suitor, Bassanio, is willing to risk all his good friend and cousin Antonio has (including a pound of his noble flesh) to win this lady’s hand. Will such a gamble and risk pay off, or will Bassanio wind up wifeless, friendless and ultimately alone? To discover the answer to these harrowing questions, join us on Tuesday March 1st. To buy passage into the production we respectfully request a small donation of two gold coins (or a toonie) to help fund the Arts program. We will also be holding a bake sale to provide some delectable delights and light refreshments while you watch. These festivities shall commence at 6:00pm. For now I shall retire, but I do anticipate your presence. God keep you!

Final Project

Our day began with Tuck Everlasting. We began by taking up discussion questions about chapters 10 and 11. Everyone then worked independently to read chapters 12, 13, and 14. Students completed study guide pages 43 - 50 in class.  In order to ensure we complete the book before March Break, students are being assigned novel study reading and discussion questions for homework this weekend. Please read chapters 15, 16, and 17 and complete the discussion questions for these chapters.

Everyone then worked their math review package. The challenge was to complete all corrections. Some used recess time to accomplish this. Completed and corrected review packages are coming home today. The unit test will be written on Monday, February 29.

The primary and junior sections of the Inter-school speech competition against The Maples Academy takes place on Tuesday, March 1. It will begin at 9:30 am. All are Welcome!

Grade 6s attended gym class with Mr. Slyk.

We then worked on our UOI. Students read about Canada’s involvement with international organizations. They learned about their final and exciting project for this unit – creating an RSA Animate about an international organization that Canada is involved with. We looked at professional and student samples of RSA animates as well as one that I made.
We discussed the process of making an RSA Animate and examined the rubric so students understand what they need to do to achieve a level 4. The class is excited about this work! Students used the rest of the day to find a partner they have not worked with before, select an organization to research, and research the organization. They recorded their notes in an organizer.
Students that needed to wrote the map work retest.

Speed

Our day began with math. We carefully took up yesterday’s homework on Input/Output Machines. We took time to discuss the many ways to express the relationships between the properties of figures. We then began today’s lesson on distance, speed, and time. We made sure that students understood what 90 km/h means. Students used this to create a table, an Input/Output machine, a graph, and finally they used it to relate Input and Output. Please complete problems on p. 395 – 396 for homework.

During novel study time, we began by taking up discussion questions about chapters 6 and 7. Student’s participation in today’s discussion showed how much they are enjoying this book. Students then worked independently to read chapters 8 and 9. Students completed study guide pages 31 – 35.

Patterns in Geometry

Our week began with math. We carefully took up last week’s homework on Input/Output Machines. We then continued this unit by examining patterns in geometry. Students were given large copies of figures with 3 to 6 sides. They drew diagonals in all figures. They created a chart that reflected the relationship between the number of sides and the number of diagonals. Students wrote pattern rules that reflected this relationship. We examined prisms, and looked for relationships between the number of sides of the base, the number of faces, the number of vertices, and the number of edges. As students work through today’s practice problems, they should refer to the samples on p. 389 to help them phrase their rules. Please complete problems on p. 390 – 391 for homework.

Students attended Music class with Mr. Andrei and Gym class with Mr. Slyk.

During novel study time, we began by taking up discussion questions about chapters 4 and 5. Students then worked independently to read chapters 6 and 7. Students should complete study guide pages 26 – 30.

Students used today’s UOI time to finish up their brochures. Brochures are due on Thursday.
We received a letter from the Polar Expressions Story Writing Competition letting us know that 11 of our Grade 6s have made it to the next round of the competition. Well done everyone!

Input/Output Machines

We continued with our new unit, Patterns in Number and Geometry. We began by taking up yesterday’s homework. Some students forgot to label the vertical and horizontal axes of their graphs, as well as give the graphs a title. Please remember to do this for each graph. We then worked on today’s lesson which was about Input/Output machines. Students related this to yesterday’s lesson. They used tables to discover the operation in machines. They graphed the patterns represented by Input/Output machines, or used graphs to create Input/Output tables. Everyone is asked to complete the practice problems on p. 386 and 387 of the MMS textbook.

Students attended music class with Mr. Andrei and gym class with Mr. Slyk.

We continued working on our novel study for this term, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. We read and responded to chapters 2 and 3. Students are asked to complete the review on chapters 1 to 3 in their novel study guide, pages 15 – 17.

Students had a quick run-through their speeches with their partners. Tomorrow is the big day. Make extra effort to practice your speech tonight. Plan your gestures, especially if you tend to be fidgety while you speak. Everyone must be in full dress uniform tomorrow. No hoodies.

We ended the day on UOI. The last two groups presented their projects on Canada’s exports. Students shared the reports they wrote on the US with their groups. We took up last week’s homework on the USA as Canada’s trading partner. Our focus then shifted to Canada’s other trading partners. Students will begin their next UOI project on Friday. They will need devices to conduct research.

Tuck Everlasting

There are just three weeks before March Break; we have lots to do before then.

We began our day with math, where we began a new unit, Patterns in Number and Geometry. We discussed the learning goals for this unit. We then began the first lesson, where students practiced showing growing patterns using pictures, tables, graphs, and pattern rules. Everybody completed at least the first practice problem in class. The remaining questions on p. 382 and 383 of the MMS textbook. Please remember to write a pattern rule that describes the relationship between the number of squares in a frame and the frame number. Students used the tables, graphs, and pattern rules to predict the number of tiles in subsequent frames.

Next up was UOI time. We got to view the projects that students have created about Canada’s Exports. It was definitely enjoyable viewing. Well done everyone on your hard work.

We began working on our novel study for this term, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. We read and responded to the prologue and chapter 1.

The class had French with Mme. Villeneuve.

Valentine's Spirit Day

Today was Valentine’s Spirit Day. Students looked very rosy in their spirit colours. Theta hosted a house game this morning that had representative members from each house racing to pick up candy hearts. Well done to Zeta for taking first place, and to Theta and Kappa for taking second and third place respectively.

Students used today math time to write their unit test on transformational geometry.

Next up was UOI time, where students became more acquainted with the states and physical forms of the USA. Students who did not get done in class should visit the link below to complete this work. USA Map Activity: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm
Students then used the information they received earlier in the week to compare Canada and the USA. The last section of work has been assigned as homework. Students will be writing a newspaper-style report on one of the following:

United States versus Canada: Who is Really More Powerful?

United States and Canada: Trade Relations Today

Our Southernly Neighbour: Friend or Foe?

Global Opinion: Has Canada Become the United States?

The report is due on Tuesday, February 16. The Canada’s exports projects are also due on this day.

We then practiced our speeches. Students did this with a peer. They took turns being the speaker and the audience, giving each other feedback on what they did well and what they need to improve on.

The class attended gym class with Mr. Slyk.
