Our day began with a math lesson. Today we reviewed what we
remembered about lines of symmetry from grade 3. Students learned that a line
of symmetry divides a figure into two congruent halves, but the halves must
coincide when folded along the mirror line. This explains why a parallelogram
does not have a line of symmetry. Students used a Mira to check for lines of
symmetry and used the their rulers to draw lines of symmetry. They learned that
figures we examined today may have 0 to 8 lines of symmetry.
In arithmetic, students learned how to reduce (simplify) a
fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common
factor.
In language, students wrote their list 20 spelling tests.
Tests are coming home today. In language we learned that compound verbs are
when there are two or more verbs in a sentence joined by connecting words.
Students identified and wrote verbs and connecting verbs in sentences.
We began our Little House in the Big Woods novel
study today. Students used class time to independently read as far as they
could in chapter 1 only. Students must complete reading chapter 1 over the
weekend if they did not get done in class. They must also complete the 3
reading response pages that relate to chapter by Monday.
In our forces unit, we reviewed how we can protect ourselves
from forces. Students then worked in pairs on a Web Quest where they learned
about forces in nature. They read about erosion, landslides, lightning, and
tidal waves. They then chose one topic to focus on and reflected on how this
force impacts the natural and man-made environment and what can be done to
reduce the impact of these forces.
Students attended French class today.
