Meeting On-Line and Face-to-Face

A good number of students were away at the soccer tournament today. For those of us at school it was work as usual.

We began the day with our Digital Citizenship inquiry unit. We finished up yesterday’s ‘Friend or Fake’ lesson by viewing a video about teen perspectives on meeting online friends face-to-face. Grade 6 students raised their literal red flags when they felt the teens responses were troubling. We discussed each of the scenarios and the Grade 6s suggested better responses or validated appropriate responses. Today students heard about the scenario that unfolded when a teen named Amy made the decision to meet face-to-face with a man she met on-line. As a class we discussed what happened to Amy, why she felt that this was the right course of action for her, how her thinking was faulty, how she put herself in danger, and who she should have trusted in this situation. Parents, please talk to your child about what we discussed in class.

Ms. Joseph taught math today. The lesson first concentrated on taking up the homework questions that were assigned yesterday. While describing patterns students are reminded to describe the input column, output column and the relation between the input and output. When graphing data, students are expected to label the axes and use a uniform scale for graphs. For homework they are to complete worksheet pages 307 - 309. Later in the day, we began the next lesson on algebraic expressions. We discussed how length (l) and (b) are used to represent length and base when calculating area and perimeter. Any letters can be used to represent variables. Students practiced representing math problems with algebraic expressions. They are to continue practicing this by completing Q. 1 – 3 on p. 380 of the MMS 7 textbook. This work is due on Tuesday.

We had novel study time where we discussed Chapter 7 of Bridge to Terabithia. Students have been assigned to read Chapter 8. This work is due on Tuesday.

Look out for trip letters about Cedar Glen coming home today.

Enjoy the long weekend.
