Fabulous Feedback

Our day was back to the usual order of things.

We started with a novel study discussion of the final Chapter of Bridge to Terabithia. Students will be completing their final reflections on the novel in class tomorrow.

Students then began presenting their summative project. The class audience gave excellent feedback and those who presented today have important suggestions on how to improve their work. Those who did not get to present today are asked to be at school at 8:30 for a run through for feedback. Presentations to younger grades take place tomorrow.

Students attended music, French, and math class. During math class they wrote their unit test.

Remember to return the permission form and payment for graduation. This is past due.

Practicing Summative Tasks

Our day ran in a very different order than usual.

Students attended the morning assembly where they heard that St. Jude’s has reclaimed the spelling bee cup. They then had gym with Mr. Orr. Next they had library time with Ms. Hayward. After that they had French with Mme. Stella and math with Ms. Joseph. In math, students finished taking up the math review. The unit test takes place tomorrow.

We had novel study time next. We discussed Chapter 12. Students have been assigned to read Chapter 13 as well as complete the responses to Chapter 13. This work is due tomorrow.

In today’s inquiry time, students were to finish up their summative presentation/skit/activity and practice their project. Everything needs to be ready to go for tomorrow when groups will present to our class for feedback.

Remember to return permission/trip forms/payment as applicable for Cedar Glen, graduation, and the spring fundraiser activity.

Cedar Glen trip permissions are past due. The spring fundraiser activity takes place tomorrow.

Metacognition

We began the week working on our Digital Citizenship inquiry unit. Students had this time to work on their summative task. Today’s goals were:

  • Complete the background research which is to be comprised of two pages of hand written jot notes
  • Complete the planning of the presentation/skit/activities
  • Create a list of all materials and supplies needed
  • Decide on who is responsible to bring in all materials & supplies needed – this is needed for tomorrow

Students were reminded to focus on reflection & perspective in their presentation/skit/activity. We also discussed an ATL skill that students will be assessed on for this project – metacognition. This means “to think about your thinking”. As a class we discussed lessons that were memorable and helped students to learn or remember concepts or content. Students shared examples from their past. As a result of this discussion, the class created a list of Dos and Don’ts. They are to use these ideas to help design a memorable lesson for younger students.

Do
Don’t
·         Make it interactive – have the students do something
·         Make it fun
·         Use mnemonics (we couldn’t think of this word in class today) to help students remember, e.g. Miriam’s mnemonic on how to remember the spelling of ‘because’
·         Use colour and images
·         Talk to the audience not at them – involve them in discussions
·         Be prepared
·         Lecture or recite a speech
·         Be long and boring
·         Use paragraphs in slide shows with or have no colour or images
·         Have students sit passively and only listen

Students should come to school tomorrow with all materials and supplies needed as well as devices.

We had novel study time next. We discussed Chapter 11. Students have been assigned to read Chapter 12 as well as complete the responses to Chapter 12. This work is due tomorrow.

We continued reading samples of interview report writing. With each sample, the class discussed strengths that they noticed and added these to the list of criteria for this form of writing.

Grade 6s had music, French and math class. In math class, Ms. Joseph took up the review work. The class did not complete the review. As a result the math test is being moved to Wednesday, May 29th.

Remember to return permission/trip forms/payment as applicable for Cedar Glen, graduation, and the spring fundraiser activity.

Cedar Glen trip permissions are past due.

There is a bake sale taking place tomorrow and on Wednesday.

Spelling bee finalists participated in the interschool spelling bee at Maples Academy and have claimed back the spelling bee cup for St. Jude’s!

Track & Field Day

Track & field took place today. It was wonderful seeing our students participating in various events. Pictures will be coming soon.

We had class in between the various events. We started with novel study and discussed Chapter 10. Students have been assigned the reading of Chapter 11 and the questions for it for homework. This work is due on Monday.

Next, students worked on the Digital Citizenship project. Today’s goal was to do the background research. Students were asked to produce 2 pages of hand written jot notes based on their readings. They were also asked to use websites that are geared towards educating youth (e.g. Netsmartz, Common Sense Education, The Edvocate, etc.) about digital citizenship. Many students made excellent progress with their note-taking. Some were caught taking short cuts and beginning their slideshows without note-taking. The attention of these students was redirected to reading and note-taking. Devices will be needed next week as students continue their work on this project.

Finally, we even managed to make time for math, which we were not anticipating. We took up all of yesterday’s homework. Students have received the review package for the patterning unit. This is to be completed over the weekend for homework and is due on Monday. The unit test is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28th.

Remember to return permission/trip forms/payment as applicable for Cedar Glen, graduation, Year-End Play Day, and spring fundraiser activity.

Cedar Glen trip permissions are past due.

Rain, rain, go away

Our track & field day was postponed due to the rain this morning. This event will take place tomorrow, Friday, May 24th.

We had a long math class this morning on reading and writing equations. We defined an equation as a statement that has two expressions that are equal. A variable in an equation represents one number. To solve the equation means to solve this number. As a class we practiced writing equations and writing sentences that represent equations. Students then did practice questions 1 - 7 on page 387 of the MMS 7 textbook. We took up all this work in class, Students then were assigned extra practice worksheets, pages 216 – 217. This work was completed in class.

We did not have time for novel study discussions today. No new novel study work has been assigned for today.

We had a little bit of inquiry time. Students learned that for their summative task they:

·         may work with any partner of their choosing.

·         will be researching an issue such as digital ethics, digital literacy, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and online privacy.

·         may choose the type of project they will do, e.g. presentation, skit, or activity.

·         need to arrange to teach their chosen issue to a class between  9 – 11 am on Thursday, May 30th.

The class made excellent progress in all these decisions in very little time. The table below shows the results

Devices are needed as students research and prepare for this summative task. Students are to bring devices tomorrow in case we have time to work on this task.

Grade 6s had music, French and more math time. In the second math class, Ms. Joseph took up worksheet practice work on p. 212 – 215 as well as the worksheets assigned earlier in the day. The class then moved on to the next lesson on solving equations. Two methods were used for solving the equations – ‘systematic trial’ and ‘by inspection’. Students are reminded to show their work when using these methods. They are to complete questions 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 on pages 393 & 395 of the MMS 7 textbook and the practice pages from worksheets on lesson 10.6. The tentative date for the unit test is Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Students are reminded that Track & Field day is set to take place tomorrow. Please bring backpacks in case of rain – we will have a regular school day if this is the case. Students should come to school in their gym uniforms. Dress for the weather tomorrow. Hats and sunblock might be needed. Extra water is a must. Students are asked to bring in $1 to purchase a freezie.

Remember to return permission/trip forms/payment as applicable for Cedar Glen, graduation, Year-End Play Day, and spring fundraiser activity.

Cedar Glen trip permissions are due tomorrow.

We hope to work on novel study and UOI summative task tomorrow even if track & field is a ‘go’.
