We began our
day with our fractions unit. Today we compared and ordered fractions in two
ways. First, we used number lines to compare and order. For the second method,
students first wrote any mixed numbers as improper fractions. They then
converted all fractions to equivalent fractions with the same denominator and
compared and ordered the numerators only. Today, students also learned how to
add fractions. We did this by modeling the problem in pictures or by converting
to an equivalent fraction with the same denominator and then added the numerators.
Students who did not complete the practice work in class are asked to complete
p. 114 – 117 of the MMS 6 practice book for homework.
Students
worked on writing their explorers unit test during today’s UOI.
Next we
continued working on speeches. Today’s goal was to write the counterargument.
We discussed the purpose of including a counterargument and the formatting of a
counterargument. Students used an organiser to assist them with formatting this
paragraph and then they were expected to write the first draft of the counterargument
paragraph. Next they needed feedback from a peer and a teacher. Finally they
need feedback from a parent tonight. All feedback must be recorded in ink
directly on the first draft. For homework, everyone is to use the feedback to revise
their work and rewrite the paragraph. The revised counterargument paragraph must
be brought to school tomorrow. Today I prioritised meeting with students who
have fallen behind in their speech work before meeting with students who are
up-to-date with their work.
Students attended
French and music class today.
We are
skiing this week Wednesday. Students are reminded to dress for the weather on
this day and bring lunch, snacks, and/or money for food. Everyone must arrive at the school by 6:45 am at the latest on
Wednesday morning. We expect to be back at 4:30 pm.
