We began our
day with a new math unit on fractions. Today we reviewed simple fractions,
improper fractions, and mixed numbers. Students learned that equivalent
fractions show the same amount. They wrote equivalent fractions by multiplying
and by dividing. They also learned to reduce fractions to simpler and simplest
forms. Students learned how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and
mixed numbers to improper fractions. Finally, everyone got to enjoy playing a
fractions game with a partner. Students who did not complete the practice work
in class are asked to complete p. 110 – 113 of the MMS 6 practice book for
homework.
We spent a
lot of time reviewing explorers work and taking up all the worksheets completed
over the past week. Students had the opportunity to ensure they had all
notes/work, that work was complete, and that their pages were in the correct
order. Students will be writing the explorers test on Monday, January 22nd.
We reviewed all the steps students should take when studying:
1. Read through all notes, handouts, and
worksheets in the Explorers Duo-tang at least 3 times
2. Draw pictures (e.g. mind mapping)
3. Make notes. Check notes for gaps.
Fill in the gaps by reading through the Duo-tang again.
4. Tell/explain someone what you have
learned, e.g. a family member.
5. Give a family member your Duo-tang
and ask them to quiz you.
Next we
continued working on speeches. Students were expected to write their Reason 3
paragraph in one sitting. If they got done in class they asked for feedback
from a peer and a teacher. Next they need feedback from a parent. All feedback
must be recorded in ink directly on the first draft. For homework, everyone is
to use the feedback to revise their work and rewrite the paragraph. The revised
Paragraph 3 must be brought to school on Monday. Today I prioritised meeting
with students who have fallen behind in their speech work before meeting with
students who are up-to-date with their work. I managed to meet with everyone
who lined up to meet with me.
Students attended
gym class today.
Remember to return your
reregistration packages to secure your spot for the 2018/2019 school year.

Dear
Parent/Guardian:
St. Jude’s
Academy is pleased to be holding a Heart and Stroke Foundation Jump Rope for
Heart event on Tuesday, February 20th, 2018. All money raised will support the
Heart and Stroke Foundation in their mission to promote children’s health and
fund vital heart and stroke research.
Jump Rope
for Heart encourages kids to get active by skipping rope while they collect
pledges for heart disease and stroke research. They also learn the importance
of living a healthy lifestyle and giving back to their community. This year
marks Jump Rope for Heart’s 36th Anniversary and the Heart and Stroke
Foundation is striving to get 1 million kids jumping in close to 4,000 schools across
Canada. Let’s be part of it!
We need your
help to reach our School fundraising goal of $1000.00.
Please help
support your child’s fundraising efforts by registering them online at
JumpRopeForHeart.ca and send out donations request emails to friends, family,
and colleagues. Online fundraising is the quickest way to reach all of your
contacts and online donors receive an automatic tax receipt.
Please visit
JumpRopeForHeart.ca and start fundraising today!
Each student
will be bringing home pledge envelopes if you prefer to collect donations
in-person. Please ensure that their pledge envelope is returned on the day of
their school’s Jump Event Day.
