Day 1
Yesterday
was a very busy day in Grade 6, hence there was not time for the blog. My
apologies for the late post.
We began our
day with math on Friday. We took up Thursday’s massive work on surface area of rectangular
prisms. I was very happy to see how many students completed all 10 problems. We
paid special attention to tricky problem # 8. We were almost out of time and we
wanted to go onto the nest lesson on volume of rectangular prisms. As a result,
we did not take questions 9 & 10. We will do this on Monday. Everyone in
the class agreed that finding the volume of a rectangular prism is easy peasy
compared to finding surface area. Students are asked to complete practice
problems on p. 226 - 227 of the MMS textbook.
We used the
next hour of class time to work on our flight inquiry project. Students had 30
minutes to prepare (by building/rebuilding their paper air planes) before we
headed outside for testing. Students have already been testing their planes
indoors this week, but have been hindered when their planes hit walls and
ceilings. Being outdoors helped with these problems but also introduced a new
factor which affected results – the wind. The class did the best they could
under the conditions. We will be testing again on Monday. Students should come
to school with any paper planes they will be testing. Everyone that needed it was
given paper airplane instructions and template for their chosen plane. Monday
will be the last day allocated to the testing of paper air planes. Students
continue to need their devices for the data management portion of this project.
Thank you to
families that were able to make it out yesterday. It was wonderful seeing
everyone at International Day. Well done to all students for their contributions
to our display table and presentation.
Scholastic
order forms went home yesterday.
Our class
will be hosting the monthly bake sale this week Tuesday and Wednesday. Students
are asked to contribute items to sell at the bake sale.
Monday is
the last day to return trip forms and payments for our trip to the Canadian
Heritage Warplane Museum.
Year Ahead Day
SJA is excited to announce that Year Ahead Day
is happening again this year! All SJA PYP students will be participating in
this exciting event on Wednesday, January 25th.
Year Ahead Day is a fun and interactive day for the students at SJA to
spend a day in the class of the grade level ahead of them (example: SK students
spend their day as Grade 1 students, Grade 6 students spend their day as Grade
7 students, etc.). This is a great way for the students at SJA to get a glimpse
into their future life at SJA! Students can get to know the teachers, see their
future classroom, and take part in activities they will be participating in
next year. Please know that the teacher that is assigned for your child for
Year Ahead Day may not necessarily be your child's classroom teacher next year.
