Day 5
We began our
day with math. We took up Wednesday’s homework on capacity and volume. We then
did a new lesson on relating units of mass. Ask your child to explain the
difference between mass and weight as well as the relationship between milligrams,
g, kg, and tonnes. Students are asked to complete practice problems on p. 240 -
241 of the MMS textbook. The Measurement unit test will be written on Thursday,
February 2nd.
During today’s
Inquiry into Flight time, we had our Air Show. Students chose the paper air
plane that performed the best in their testing to participate in the Air Show. After
a few practice runs, groups hurled their planes as best they could. Students
had three chances at winning during the competition. They winners were decided
by scoring according to placement during these three chances. Well done to
Alffino and Sofia on their first place, Sai, Eghosa, and Satvik on taking
second place, and Kaaya and Areej on winning third place for the paper air
planes that traveled the furthest.
Students reflected on how their plane had performed
compared to other planes, and on how well they had completed their flight
report, before handing in their flight reports for marking.
At the end
of the day we worked on speeches. I checked that speech letters have been
signed and speech topics chosen. Students who did not get their letters signed
need to have this done before class tomorrow. We continued working on the
prewriting part of the writing process. Students decided where they stood on
their chosen issue – for or against and recorded this information. Next they
began thinking of reasons to support their opinion and examples to support
their reasons. They were challenged to come up with five reasons and 3 examples
for each reason. They recorded their ideas in their Reasons and Examples Chart.
They used their devices to help them find supporting facts for their reasons.
Any work that was not completed in class for this chart needs to be completed
for homework. Students will need devices for their speech research work
tomorrow.
While
students worked on their speeches I started to hear presentations on ‘our responsibilities
with relation to flight’. Students presented these last Monday when I was away.
Presentations have to be repeated in order for me to assess students’ work.
Those who did not have materials at school today, such as devices and cure
cards, are asked to bring them to school tomorrow when they will present their
work. We will be working on portfolios tomorrow too. Be sure to bring your
portfolio to school if you haven’t already returned it.
Students
attended gym and French class today.
A few
students have not yet returned their City
of Ember books. Please do this as soon as possible.
