Day 3
We began our
day with math. We first took up yesterday’s homework on the cubic metre. We
then did a new lesson on capacity and volume. Ask your child how many cm3
are in 1 mL, in L and in 1 m3? How many mL are in 1 L and 1m3?
How many L are in 1 m3? Students
are asked to complete practice problems on p. 234 - 235 of the MMS textbook.
During
today’s speech time, students read a sample of a persuasive speech. While we
discussed the sample, we noted how the speech sample made use of transition
words between paragraphs. How it began with an introduction, 3 reason
paragraphs, a counterargument, and ended with a concluding paragraph. Next we
examined the rubric in order for students to fully understand how they will be
graded and what is expected of them. Finally we began considering ideas for
speech topics. Some topics were suggested to help students begin a brainstorm.
We had 5 minutes of silent time where everyone wrote all the topics they are
interested in writing about. Next, students narrowed these topics down to ones
they are excited about or knowledgeable about or are interested in researching
more about. Students have been to further think about and discuss their ideas
at home tonight and tomorrow. Students need to come to school on Thursday with
their topics chosen and recorded in their speech package.
Next up was
time to work on our flight inquiry project. Today students analysed their data.
Students who had sent me their graphs received a printed version of them for
their analysis. Those who had not completed this work used their recess time to
catch up.
Grade 6s also
attended French and gym class today.
Thank you
for all the items sent in for the bake sale today. The bake sale continues
tomorrow. Students are asked to contribute items to sell at the bake sale.
These may be bought or home baked but must
be peanut and nut free. Thank you in advance for your contributions.
Forms and
payments for our trip to the Canadian Heritage Warplane Museum are now past
due.
Soccer will
be resuming for the girls tomorrow.
Year Ahead Day
SJA is excited to announce that Year Ahead Day
is happening again this year! All SJA PYP students will be participating in
this exciting event on Wednesday, January 25th.
Year Ahead Day is a fun and interactive day for the students at SJA to
spend a day in the class of the grade level ahead of them (example: SK students
spend their day as Grade 1 students, Grade 6 students spend their day as Grade
7 students, etc.). This is a great way for the students at SJA to get a glimpse
into their future life at SJA! Students can get to know the teachers, see their
future classroom, and take part in activities they will be participating in
next year. Please know that the teacher that is assigned for your child for
Year Ahead Day may not necessarily be your child's classroom teacher next year.
