We began our day with math. We took up yesterday’s lesson on
relating fractions, percents, and decimals. Today’s lesson was about estimating
and finding percents. To do this students used rounding to estimate. They learned
that the word “of” can be replaced with “X” in a math sentence. To solve a
problem like 1/3 X 50, students multiplied the numerator by the numerator and
the denominator by the denominator. This meant that they had to write 50 as a
fraction, 50/1. They simplified to find the final solution. Today’s lesson has
been a more complex one for students, as we are using methods that Grade 6s are
not yet required to know. We completed questions 1 and 2 in class. Students are
asked to complete the remaining problems on p. 318 & 319 the MMS textbook
for homework. Students worked on their math while waiting to meet with me to
conference on their Exhibition essay paragraph.
Students attended French class today.
The remainder of our day was spent on Exhibition. I
conferenced with each group on their Causes paragraph. Students were asked to
contribute causes they came across in their research that were not included in
this paragraph. All groups were asked to add more evidence and detail to their
paragraphs. We discussed ways to improve sentences or ideas that did not make
sense. Once the conference time was over, the groups worked as a team to write
the second, revised draft of the Causes paragraph. Only two groups managed to
complete this work, even though everyone missed gym and second recess in an
attempt to get this done. Because the writing is taking much longer than
anticipated, we will have to adjust the due date of the essay. Students will be
informed at a later time of the new due date. As a result, will not have a math
lesson tomorrow. Today’s math homework will be due on Tuesday, April 12.
Students who did not have a parent read the first draft of
their paragraphs yesterday, are asked to get this done today. Students are
asked to have others help them with suggestions for revisions. We are not correcting
conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation) at this point, but are suggesting
changes to the main ideas and supporting evidence of the paragraphs. Peers, teachers,
mentors, and parents are all asked to participate in the role of reading the
first drafts and making revision suggestions. Please write directly on the
drafts in pen. Students must not do any writing at home. All essay writing must
be done in class.
Some groups met with their mentors today.
Students are reminded to work on their digital portfolios. They
are asked to select 4 items from “The Marketplace UOI” to add to their digital
portfolio, one for each category below:
·
My Best Work
·
Something I Worked My Hardest On
·
Something I Need to Improve On
·
A Way I Showed a Learner Profile Attribute
The video, brochure, and RSA animate are items students may
consider uploading. They will probably need to do some problem-solving to
figure out how to do this. Students may need to scan paper items, save them
with the appropriate document name and then upload them to their digital
portfolio. Students who cannot scan items at home are asked to bring these in
to school. I will scan them and email
them to students. I am asking that students try complete this by Monday, April
11 as homework. From Monday to Wednesday next week, Ms. Ymbang will be
available to students to help them with any problems they have had with
uploading items. She will also be checking that digital portfolios are
up-to-date at this time.
Remember to send in old batteries that you need to safely
dispose of. The Grade 1 and 2 classes at SJA will take care of this for you as
part of their UOI.
