We began our day with math. We took up yesterday’s lesson on
subtracting fractions. Today’s lesson was about percents. We reviewed what we
had learned about fractions and decimals earlier in the year. Students
understand that percent means per one hundred parts. They showed percents using
a hundredths grid. They solved problems where they showed their work as a fraction
over 100, a decimal, a percent, and on a hundredths grid. Students are finding
this work super easy as they blasted through many of the practice problems.
There will be very little work left to be done as homework today. Everybody’s Q 1 – 5 has been completed,
checked, and corrected. Students who did not get done in class are to complete
the remaining problems on p. 310 & 311 the MMS textbook for homework.
The remainder of our day was spent on Exhibition. I met with
the four groups I did not get to meet with yesterday to check on the research
work they did on Friday and yesterday. I again made sure that students had used
the checklist they received as a self-assessment. I used the same tool to
assess their work. They have been given feedback on improvements that need to
be made. These students were asked to look at their lines of inquiry and
concept questions to determine if these have been addressed in their research.
If there are gaps in the research, students should look for additional sources
to fill the gaps.
Students who feel they have completed their research, i.e.
they have information that addresses all their lines of inquiry and concept
question, began planning their essay. They used the graphic organizer provided
to record their ideas, opinions, and supporting evidence. Each student in a
group is required to complete their own organizer that is a product of the
collaboration of the group’s ideas. Some students began drafting the body
paragraphs. One suggestion is that each member of a group take responsibility
for at least one body paragraph (cause, effect, solution). Group members need
to supply each other with information from their own research that is evidence
for their paragraphs. Students were instructed that all planning and essay
drafts must be hand written. They were asked to skip lines as they write to
allow for revisions and edits.
Some groups met with their mentors today.
Remember to send in old batteries that you need to safely
dispose of. The Grade 1 and 2 classes at SJA will take care of this for you as
part of their UOI.
Grade 6s attended gym and music class today.
Grade 6s will replace their binder portfolio with a digital
portfolio going forward. Ms. Ymbang began meeting with students today to give
them their username and passwords to access their digital portfolio. This
information is being recorded in students’ agendas. Students are asked to NOT
change their passwords. Ask your child if they worked on their digital
portfolio today. If they did, ask them to show you the work they uploaded.
