Hinduism

Today was moving day. We worked in the main building. There was also a soccer and choir trip taking place that some of our students were participating in. As a result, we had a very small group of students in Grade 6 today.

We did a math lesson where we learned how probabilities can be expressed as fractions and decimals. Our recent math unit on percents, decimals, ratios, and rates was a great help in today’s work. Students are reminded to begin each problem by first determining the total number of possible outcomes and using this number as the denominator I their fraction. Students converted their fractions to a fraction where the dominator is 100. This made it easy to write as a percent or decimal. Students are asked to complete questions on p. 414 & 415 of the textbook.

We had inquiry time next. We were treated to a special guest visit by Dave and Gina. They spoke to the class about Hinduism. They described what Hindus believe about god, important figures in this belief system, about the many festivals that Hindus celebrate in the year, and much, much more. The class came away being much more informed about Hinduism.

Students attended French class today.

Track & Field Day

Today was Track & Field Day! Grade 6s were active at the park participating in shot put, triple jump, and the 100 m dash. We then headed back to school for lunch.

We were very productive and used the time after lunch to have a discussion about chapter 5 of Number the Stars, read chapter 6, and then have a discussion about chapter 6.

We even got started on our next and final math unit – Probability. Students used words such as certain, likely, impossible, unlikely, possible, etc. to describe events. We discussed experimental and theoretical probabilities. We conducted an experiment using 3 paper bags with different, unknown proportions of blue and yellow counters. We repeated the experiment 10 times for each bag, recorded the results, and wrote experimental probabilities for the outcomes. We used a graph to do the same with theoretical probabilities. We did not do the practice questions today – we will use class time to do this tomorrow.

We then headed back to the park where Grade 6s completed the running long jump, 400 m, 800 m, and 200 m events.

Back at school, we heard that Jasleen, Temi, and Zachary have been selected to participate in a Track & Field Day at The Maples Academy tomorrow. Well done to all Grade 6s for their participation and for a productive day!

Temple Visit

We set out on our trip to the Fo Guang Shan Temple first thing this morning. Our tour guide at the temple was called Jesse. He is also the director of the temple. He explained the many of the artefacts to students and answered their many questions. We had a Q & A session in the temple’s shrine sitting on cushions in a circle. We learned about reincarnation, karma, and the statues at the front of the temple. Jesse also showed us the memorial room and bookshop. Here students got to see the holy texts of Buddhism.

When we got back to class we had a discussion of what we had learned. Students then completed and handed their reflection package on Buddhism.

After lunch, we had novel study time. We discussed chapter 4 of Number the Stars as a group. We then read chapter 5. Students answered questions independently.

Buddhism

We began our day with novel study time. We had a whole class discussion of vocabulary students encountered in chapter 3 as well as their thoughts on the literal, inferential, and opinion questions that they answered on these chapters. We then read the next chapter together. Students then worked independently to answer the next set of questions.

Students then either began working on their math unit test on Patterns in Number or Geometry or they had conference time with to review their math package. All students chose to write the test today.

We then continued learning about belief systems and today we began learning about Buddhism. We watched a documentary about the Birmingham Buddhist Centre in England.

Ask your child what they learned today. Please remember that we are visiting the Buddhist temple tomorrow. Be sure to return your trip form.

Legends

We began our day with novel study time. We had a whole class discussion of vocabulary students encountered in chapters 1 and 2, as well as their thoughts on the literal, inferential, and opinion questions that they answered on these chapters. We then read the next chapter together. Students then worked independently to answer the next set of questions.

For the next part of the day, students wrote their second version of a tale or legend for the writing assessment. Over the past couple of days, we have been reading a variety of samples of students writing. Grade 6s were able to accurately determine the level of each writing piece, and justify why the piece was worth that level in terms of  strengths and weaknesses. We used the samples to create an anchor chart of what makes a tale or legend awesome. This chart was displayed in the classroom while students either wrote an improved version of their original legend or wrote a new legend idea.

Once students completed the writing assessment, they began working independently on their math review package. Students are asked to complete the package for homework. I will check packages on Monday. Students may then write the unit test on Monday if they are ready to do so. Students who are not ready on Monday, will write the test on Tuesday. They will be kept out of gym and second recess to write the test. The reason for this change is due to our trip on Tuesday.

We began our day with a math lesson on relating distance, time, and speed. Students used given data to create tables, graphs, Input/Output machines and find average speed. Students made good progress on practice questions in class. They are asked to complete the questions on p. 394 & 395 of the MMS textbook. Students are bringing 1- cm grid paper home with them. Students will be writing a unit test on Tuesday, May 26.

It was then time for our inquiry unit, Religion Rules! We had a discussion on what we learned about Christianity from yesterday's guest speaker Pastor Andrew Wood. Students took class time to record their learning and to address our central idea and lines of inquiry as they relate to Christianity. We then focused on Judaism. We watched two videos to help us understand this religion:

We paused the videos frequently in order for students to discuss and record their learning and how our central idea and lines of inquiry relate to Judaism.

Today we got to visit the MYP students to be an audience  for a couple of Grade 10 students as they presented their personal projects. The personal project is the  Grade 10 equivalent of exhibition, but it is done independently instead of collaboratively  in a group.

Religion Rules

Today we got back to more of our regular daily routine. We started a new math unit called Patterns in Number and Geometry. We focused on representing patterns in today's lesson. Students represented patterns by modelling them on grid paper, recording them in tables, writing a pattern rule (Start at ______. Add _______ each time.), graphing coordinates on grid paper, and writing input/output rules. Students are asked to complete the questions on p. 382 & 383 of the MMS textbook. Students are bring grid paper home with them.

Students then worked on their term 3 writing assessment piece. Students wrote a tale or a fable. Before they began writing, we examined the rubric to ensure students understood how their writing will be graded and what has to be included in their writing.

Once the writing assessment was completed, the class was challenged to complete the first draft of their exhibition letter that they began yesterday. Students that completed their draft met with me to discuss revisions that need to be made. They made changes that were suggested. Good, typed copies of letters need to be emailed to me by Thursday or printed out and handed in to me by Thursday.

After recess and lunch, students headed out on their golfing trip with Ms. Lovan.

We ended the day by beginning work on our last inquiry unit - Religion Rules. Students were introduced to the transdisciplinary theme, central idea, and lines of inquiry for this unit.

Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Central Idea: Beliefs and values guide human expressions.

Lines of Inquiry:

·          Beliefs and values practiced globally

·          Expressions of a belief system

·          How knowledge of belief systems lead to a better understanding of people

We will explore 5 religions as a class: Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. Students were also introduced to the final UOI project - creating an RSA Animate of a religion or religions of their choosing.

Today students participated in a place mat activity where they worked with a group to brainstorm all the know about these 5 religions. They shared their knowledge with the class. The class then recorded their wonderings about these religions. We hope to find answers to their questions as we progress through this unit.

The Grade 6 class has been asking for an end of year fun trip to celebrate the year. They came up with their own (very expensive) list of ideas and had a very excited voting session on the options they generated. I will keep you posted on the progress of their ideas and planning.

It is a great time to begin purchasing uniforms for next year, as Multiform Canada will be donating 25% of purchases to the Nepal Earthquake Fund. Students are asked to come to school in their gym clothes on Monday's and Wednesday's from now until the end of the year.

Look out for June lunch forms and Ice Cream Sundae order forms coming home today.

Please let me know if you have a video copy of the exhibition that you are willing to share with other parents in the Grade 6 class.

Stratford Trip

Friday was a wonderfully successful day for this year's Grade 6s. All their hard work paid off and they were able to demonstrate their learning in a confident way. I am very proud of them.

Today we took time to reflect on the exhibition. Students wrote about their favourite part of exhibition and how they showed that they were an inquirer. They then began working on the first draft of a letter to next year's Grade 6s. The letter explains what exhibition is, the steps taken in the process, some challenges that students faced, advise on what to do and what not to do, and wishes.

It was then time for students to board the bus and head to Stratford to watch The Taming of the Shrew.

We should be back at 6 pm tonight.

Many students have not returned their golfing permission forms. We are golfing tomorrow from 12 pm to 2 pm. Students should come to school in their gym clothes for the golfing trip.
