The Cabinet

This morning, our school was treated to a presentation by Ms. Sandhu's Grade 3/4 class. This was followed by another presentation from Christina of the Eden Community Food Bank. We also got to hear that Theta is in the lead for the House Cup, followed by Kappa and then Zeta.

In today's math lesson we practiced constructing figures. We did this in two ways. For the first way, students used tans to construct as many figures as possible that met specified requirements, e.g. a quadrilateral made of 2 or more tans and that has two 135⁰ angles.  In the second way, students used a ruler, a compass, and 3 given sides to construct a triangle. We watched part of a YouTube clip to help us understand how to do this. Students are asked to complete only question 2, 3, and 5 on p. 94 & 95 of the MMS textbook. They have been instructed to bring home their geometry sets and tangrams in order to complete their homework. Remember to bring geometry sets back to school on Monday.

In our inquiry time, we took up the work students completed for homework on the role of the Prime Minister in Canadian government. Students found the answer to one of the questions they had asked at the beginning of this unit, "If the President Obama lives in the White House, where does Prime Minister Stephen Harper live?" Ask your child if they remember the answer. In today's class, students were inquirers as they read about the Cabinet. We took this work up in class. They also began learning about Parliament. Incomplete Parliament pages need to be completed at home.

Before we had our novel study discussions, we watched Shannen's Video. Students then met in groups to discuss chapter 8 of Shannen and the Dream for a School. Students should read and complete the discussion questions relating to chapter 9.

We had a special guest visiting our class today. Mr. Alex, one our Oakwood teachers, visited our class. He has several years experience teaching on reserves in rural areas in Manitoba. He shared pictures he had taken during his work there and shared with the class what life on a reserve was like. Grade 6s thoroughly enjoyed his presentation. Ask your child to tell you what they learned during the presentation.

Grade 6s attended French and Gym class today.
