Making Exhibition Choices

We did a lot of end of term reflection work today. First, students wrote their Term 2 report card comments. They reflected on their strengths and weaknesses in UOI, language, math, and ATL skills. Next, they wrote in their student-led conference packages about our How we organize ourselves inquiry unit and math. Finally, they added their chosen work samples to their IB portfolios and organized their Term 2 duo-tangs to be ready for conferences that happen shortly after March Break.
Students then attended math class with Ms. Joseph. They went over yesterday’s probability test. Look out for these coming home today and take time to review, sign, and return them to school after the break. Grade 6s also attended French class with Mme. Stella.
Three students from my 2018-2019 Grade 6 class paid us a special visit today. They spoke to the class about exhibition by describing what it was like for them and giving advice to this year’s group. They also answered questions that students had. Here is a summary of their advice:
·         Be open minded to the suggestions of group members and mentors
·         Stay on topic of tasks
·         Be creative – you want to stand out as everyone is doing the same project (but on a different issue)
·         Do a fair share of the work - its not fair if one group member is doing more
·         Stay on top of your MLA citations - keep a record of your sources as you use them
·         Be organized – don’t lose anything
·         Try your best
·         Have fun
·         Be mindful of deadlines
·         Have perseverance
·         Remember to do all components

We revisited the brainstorms that we started earlier in the week. Students had the opportunity to add more issues to their brainstorm. Next it was time to whittle down the issues using the following criteria:
Is it …..
·         suited to an in-depth inquiry?
·         suitable for your age?
·         challenging enough?
·         a local issue that could also be a global issue?
·         actionable?
·         likely to be approved by your parents?
If students answered ‘no’ to the above, they removed issues from their brainstorm.
Next, students examined the brainstorm charts and chose their top 5 issues that they would like to explore. They also noted if they would prefer to work on their own or in a group.

We packed up for the end of term. Ms. Jaskolka’s and Mr, Conte’s classes joined us to enjoy the leftover treats from the Ambassador’s Tea Party before heading to the St. Patrick’s house game and dismissal.

Students should practice for the spelling bee during March Break.
Have a wonderful break, everyone!
