Map Perspectives

We worked on speeches for the first section of our time together today. We repeated yesterday’s procedure. Eight students volunteered to say their speeches to the whole class. Students chose to stay and be part of the audience and give feedback to those presenting or to go outside into the hallways and practice their speech to a buddy or on their own. The eight who presented today received excellent feedback from their peers and from me. They are coming home with a written transcript of the feedback to help them improve their speech. Everyone should be practicing and memorizing their speech. The in-class contest takes place on Tuesday, February 4th. All students must wear blazers – no hoodies – for the oral competition.
Next, we continued working on our How we organize ourselves unit. We began by having students share the results of their Global Connections Treasure Hunt. Countries that were mentioned were pinned on our class map. In addition to the countries that were pinned yesterday, students should be able to identify and locate Pakistan, Japan, UAE, Kenya, Luxembourg, Canada, USA, Aruba, Bangladesh, Germany, and South Korea on a blank map. Students received a blank map today. They are to use this map to label all pinned countries and they should use it as a study tool to prepare for the unit test.
Our goal for today’s inquiry lesson was for students to continue to develop an understanding of the connections that Canada has with other countries. They participated in a fun activity with Aanika reading the story of the Global Kid out loud. She was interrupted by a number of students who described global connections between the kid in the story and the products he was using. Our hope is to add more pins to our world map tomorrow to further represent the connections in the Global Kid story and from students’ Global Connections Treasure Hunt.
We had more inquiry time at the end of the day. This time our learning goal was to describe the advantages and disadvantages of different map projections and how they shape how we see the world. Ask your child to tell you about the short comings of the Mercator and Peters maps. We had fun looking at the globe from different perspectives and identifying the different continents. Students are encouraged to further explore the Mapping our world website and activities on their own.
We ended our inquiry time with a mapping activity. On their ‘Continents’ map, students are to:
·         use the key we created in class to neatly colour the continents as follows
o   North America (red)
o   South America (yellow)
o   Africa (green)
o   Europe (purple)
o   Antarctica (white)
o   Australia (brown)
o   Asia (orange)
·         to do some research to discover where Europe ends and Asia begins
·         discover which continent Greenland belongs to
·         discover which continent Iceland belongs to
·         label the one line of longitude and the three lines of latitude on the map
·         add the compass rose to the map – research if you don’t know what this is
·         Colour all oceans, seas, and lakes in blue
Incomplete mapwork is to be completed for homework and is due tomorrow.

How We Organize Ourselves

We worked on speeches for the first section of our time together today. Four students volunteered to say their speeches to the whole class. Students chose to stay and be part of the audience and give feedback to those presenting or to go outside and practice their speech to a buddy or on their own. The four who presented today received excellent feedback from their peers and from me. They are coming home with a written transcript of the feedback to help them improve their speech. Everyone should be practicing and memorizing their speech. The in-class contest takes place on Tuesday, February 4th. All students must wear blazers – no hoodies – for the oral competition.
Next, we said goodbye to our explorers unit. Students have received all their work, i.e. timelines, unit test, and RSA Animation rubrics. They took time to reflect on what they did well and what they need to improve on. They used their weaknesses to formulate learning goals for themselves and success criteria that describe how they will achieve their learning goal. They also reflected on their favourite part of the unit. They then selected 4 samples of work to add to their IB portfolios. This will be done later. Parents, please sign their test, timeline rubric, and RSA Animation rubric. Return the explorer duo-tangs to school tomorrow.
Later we began work on our fourth inquiry unit. Our goal was for students to understand the new unit. They should be able to
  • identify the unit’s central idea
  • understand the unit’s lines of inquiry
  • understand the unit’s key concepts
  • describe the summative tasks for this unit
Students will be creating a video to attract newcomers to a place in Canada as one of the summative tasks. We viewed samples of these projects from last year to help students understand what is required of them.
Our next goal was for students describe the connections that they as individuals have to the rest of the world and what it means to be a global citizen. They played a fun GLOBINGO game to help them achieve this. From this game, five country connections were pinned to our class world map: Portugal, Croatia, England/UK, India, and the Philippines. Each day will pin more countries that we have connections to. Students need to keep track of these countries and know where they are located on a world map. The unit test will have a large map work question where students many be asked to identify any pinned country.

For homework, students are to further explore our global connections by completing the Global Connections Treasure Hunt. This is due tomorrow. They are to also complete the map work activity page that is in their duo-tangs. This is also due tomorrow.
Students attended French class with Mme. Stella, gym class with Mr. Orr, and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math students …For homework, students are to complete and incomplete work form yesterday: Q. 5 on P. 237 and Q. 1 – 5 on the worksheet. The unit test will be written on Monday, 3rd.

Viking Art

We worked on speeches for the first section of our time together today. Students read their speech in its entirety to determine if the speech was between 3 and 5 minutes. A few speeches were longer than 5 minutes. These students will need to remove non-essential information in order to not go over the 5-minute cap. Students then received cue cards. They worked to write their speeches on cue cards. The cue cards are to be used as a memorization tool. Students may hold the cue cards when they present their speech. The more they rely on the cue cards, the more their memorization grade will be affected. Our goal is to have the speech memorized entirely. Good copies of speeches are to be submitted for grading tomorrow. Completed cue cards are due tomorrow.
We had a wonderful inquiry time together doing Viking art. Students assembled their waves, drew their Viking longboats and sails and assembled the whole picture. Those who are behind are to complete the longboat and/or sail for homework.

Finishing Up the RSA Animations

Our time together was very busy. During Where we are in place and time, students had the goal of completing the following steps for their RSA Animation:
Step 6: Increase the speed of the video (total time 3 – 5 mins)
Step 7: Write and record a narration that tells the story of your explorer
Step 8: Upload video to YouTube (do not use real name and do not allow comments) and send me the link (mhaag@stjudesacademy.com)
For some, the above process went smoothly and was completed in the time allocated. For others, the process was complicated and full of trouble. Students who did not complete the work are to complete it over the weekend and send me the link.
We discussed how to write the introduction and conclusion paragraphs for speeches today. Students then had time to write quietly. When they were done, they gave feedback to a peer. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for me to give feedback on today’s paragraphs. Parents, these ones are up to you to critique. Once students receive parent feedback, they should write revised drafts of the introduction and conclusion. These are due on Monday.
Students attended French class with Ms. Autio, and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math students …For homework, students are to complete Q. 1, 2, 7, 9 on P. 222.
