Vikings

Today we heard another idea on who may have discovered America. Grade 6s heard about Vikings from Scandinavia who were expert sailors and who formed colonies on Iceland and Greenland. Ask your child if there is evidence to support the view that the Vikings reached America? Students should add Eirik the Red, Bjarni Herfolfsson, Leif Eriksson, and Thorfinn Karlsefni to their timeline.

During speech time, we discussed choosing stronger reasons to better convince our audience. Students separated their reasons into stronger and weaker reasons. They discussed their thinking with a partner. Their three strongest reasons were recorded in their ‘Topic and Reasons’ Chart. Any incomplete work needs to be completed as homework. Some students are behind in their speech schedule as the speech letter was not signed, the topic was not chosen today, and their ‘Reasons & Examples Chart’ was incomplete. Please get caught up with your work if this applies to you.

Students were supposed to have gym at the end of the day, but Mr. Orr was away at a tournament. We used this time to get caught up with our explorers work. During this time students learned about trade between Europe and Asia using the Silk Road. They heard about how the Crusades, the expansion of the Ottoman Empire.
