Grade 6s
reported that they had a good time during Year Ahead Day yesterday.
Today we
spent time reviewing some of the work from Wednesday’s explorers’ lesson. We reviewed
the Polynesian explorers and the evidence that they may have reached the Americas.
We then discussed evidence that a Buddhist monk named Hwui Shan may sailed to
Fu Sang. Some believe this to be Mexico. Finally we read about the legend of
St. Brendan reaching Paradise. We discussed which land this may have been and
the possibility that the land was America. Ask your child what they think of
this legend. We discussed how historians use timelines to represent events in chronological
order. Students have begun working on a timeline project. They should add
Asian, Polynesian, and Irish explorers to their timeline for Monday. The
timeline should span 400 AD – 1700 AD.
During
speech time, we read the sample of persuasive writing, identifying paragraphs (introduction,
reason, counterargument, and concluding paragraphs). Students noted that the
opinion (thesis statement) and reasons were stated in the introduction and
restated in the conclusion. Each reason paragraph was supported with examples.
Students are now generating 5 reasons to support their opinion as well as at
least 3 examples for each reason. These should be recorded in the reasons and
examples chart. Research may need to be done to generate reasons and examples.
This chart is due on Monday. Some students are behind in their speech schedule
as the speech letter was not signed and/or the topic was not chosen today.
Please get caught up with your work if this applies to you.
Students were assigned to complete a piece of Turtle
Island with words and images that represents their Canadian identity. These
pieces will be assembled to form Turtle Island. The puzzle pieces should be
completed with care and colour. These are past due.
Grade 6s
attended math, French, and music class today. In math students practiced the division of decimals.
The Crawford
Lake trip payments are past due.
